Sound cards

hey there

I have recently aquired the amazing game TES:IV oblivion, which as it turns out is a very CPU intensive game. I mean it runs quite well for me on high settings with hdr and everything but it has a lot of physics and AI calculations.

so anyway I was thinking about purchasing a sound card (been using onboard) to take that load off the CPU and hopefully get a bit better sound quality. I was just wondering if getting a sound card like say...the audigy 2 zs, would make that big of a difference and how big of a difference?

your input is appreciated

The audigy 2 zs is a great card, you will probably gain some speed in the game and you will notice the difference in quality for sure.

before you do consider what speakers you are using. While it's is an insanely high price for an sound card an x-fi xtreme music makes 10 virtual speakers for headphones and enhances everything else. if you don't care about quality.

this is better for less, however not to powerful.

Garunteed, your 10 virtual speakers are still inferior to a set of quality stereo headphones, playing normal stereo. Even better a set of custom canalphones.

Indeed. Unfortunately the HRTFs that are used to create the "virtual speakers" are generic. People's hearing isn't generic, as their ears are different shapes, so some people will note that the positioning for "virtual speakers" is poor or non-existant.

Last time I checked, which was a good few years ago now, the HRTFs of the time worked best on teenage girls... Yes, sex and age also change how hearing works too. Thus, at best, "virtual speakers" are going to be a poor substitute.

well I have some pretty good 5.1 surround headphones...umm, by zalman, anyhoo I don't need any new stuff in the speaker department. And I'm not looking to spend more than $50 so I think the audigy 2 zs is the way to go, just gotta find the best deal

I didn't hear that. Nope. Didn't hear anything about "5.1" headphones at all.

In that case the x-fi will be even better I thought that you had one of those cheap $2 ones. But where can you find you find the 2zs for that price?

I picked up a Audigy 2ZS for £20 off Amazon UK and it did actually make my pc perform better, you should hear the difference between a sub standard AC97 audio processor and the Audigy 2, it's pretty good.
