PCI express to AGP Converter

Hi guys long time no see,

I hope that your all keeping well these days, nice to see AOA coming along nicely still

I have a question to ask here about an upgrade im doing , now im not looking to upgrade everything in my PC at the moment as my study costs are quite dear. Im looking to upgrade my motherboard and also my processor to the LGA 775 platform with also a new processor P4 @3.8ghz and some new RAM too, but i havent got the funds to upgrade my Geforce 6800 Ultra too which is AGP and the motherboard im thinking of purchasing Has PCI express. Im also having trouble finding a good motherboard that has AGP slot on it that supports the processor, Why im asking is because a mate of mine is passing it on to me for a resonable price. but if i cant convert it then i will not go through with the sale.

What im wondering is , is there any converter out there that enables me to use my card with this system? as in PCI express to AGP interface.

Thanks for your answers guys =>

No. There isnt a PCI Express AGP converter available at the moment. And I dont think there will be becasue PCI Express has much more badnwidth than AGP making an adapter impossible in terms of the ammount of data PCI Express carries. My suggestion is, use a cheap PCI Express video card in the mean time. Such as a 7300 or something. Because passing up a good deal on high end parts like that could be very costly in the future when you do decide to upgrade.

PCI-E converters do exist, in that there is a converter actually on the PCI-E 6800Us. All NV40s are AGP cores, which is why a HSI bridge chip is used to make them work on PCI-E. Making a converter that runs in a PCI-E slot is not as easy however, as both voltages, and available current are extremely different between the two standards.

Selling the 6800U and buying a 7600GT would work well though. The 7600GT is very close to a 6800U in performance, with some overclocking.

Hi daniel Nice to see you in my post once again too, always a pleasure, to talk to you. Im doing good these days and I hope same goes for yourself too !

Thanks and greets "Rondog" for your reply too , erm yeah maybe it would be a good idea for me to sell it on ebay or something and maybe then add the price of what i get and maybe add a few more bucks to get a better card which is either better or matches this one i have now.

"dsio" Greetings and thx for your reply, yeah i have heard of the NV40`s on the PCI-E and other`s actually not using the full potenial of the slots speed. But i dont know whats the story now with actually fully using its features?

Would you have by any chance a circut diagram of this converter off hand?

Once again guys thanks so much for your replies

Kind regards

==EDIT==

Jezz i just looked at overclockers.co.uk there`s a card that you described and god its really cheap compared to the AGP version i bought there awile back......mmm... maybe i might just do that to be honest

NV40s don't even max out the AGP bus let alone PCI-E. Not many cards do in fact. The NV40 is however designed for AGP 16X, so it can use the full PCI-E bandwidth if needed. It just doesn't need to.

Ok so , what i do then is get rid of this card really and get a PCI express card. No converters other than onboard as on the card`s PCB on the market that i can get?

is this correct?

That's about the size of it. Even if you COULD get such a card, you wouldn't be able to fit it into your case....
