Need your advise on 6800GS AGP I have a Palit 6800GS AGP 256 DDR3 graphic card (GC). The problem with the card is when I play latest games such as Titan Quest or Oblivion the GC gets extremely hot about 69C to 87C, ambient Temp is about 46C to 52C. This problem occassionally causes my system to crash and reboot. The stock heatsink and fan is not sufficient to keep my GC cool. I only have limited choices for cooling kit due to where I live. http://www.modernopc.com/store/index...4ee79c5321d203 I'm considering the Evercool Turbo 2 Dual Heatpipe Universal VGA Cooler. My question is whether the said heatsink will protect the PCI-E to AGP bridge chip on my GC? I initially wanted to chnage the stock heatsink to a Zalman Fatal1ty FS-V7 HIgh Performance VGA Cooler, but the cooling kit does not protect the bridge chip. Please advise. Thanks in advance.<br /> === The following is an automatically generated message === This is mdk2's first post. The Welcome thread is here. It's the name for the PCI-e to AGP chip. That's if it isn't covered by your other heatsink.

I'd just find a small fan or active heatsink to put on it. Or find a better cooling solution ![]()

Mind recommending me any active heatsinks. A fan is out of the question as it will be too big as the HIS chip is quite close to the slot interface or whatever you call the copper-like things that you slot into the AGP slot.

Could you please give me a list of specifications on your card from Rivatuner. As far as I know, your card should be an NV40 AGP with no HSI bridge, but I'll need to get the info from Rivatuner. There are some tricks to try in order to bring down temps as well.

Um, how do you get a report from riva tuner. I'm absolute noob at this. I can confirm that there is a HSI chip as I have removed the heatsink. The HSI chip is just below the GPU, i.e. between the GPU and the AGP slot connection. I prefer not to underclock the card and I have set the fan speed to 100% under riva tuner.

Oh yeah, my card is here http://www.palit.com.tw/en/products/nv_agp_6800GS.html

Yea, you have an NV42, so overclocking should be great on that card. Push the core clockspeed as high as possible that is stable, it should be 420+Mhz, then push the memory as high as possible. Download the latest TweaksRUs Xtreme-G drivers from AOAFiles, and they include the "coolbits" overclocking option in the driver advanced settings. Thats the easiest method for a beginner.

One thing that i do to help keep all the temps in my rig down.....i keep the side pannel off and have a small desk fan blowing on the motherboard on high, it keeps all my temps down by about 5c at least, and i constantly keep my GPU fan clean of dust buildup as it can gather dust quickly. You can also try reaplying your heatsink with some Artic SIlver 5, that should help your temps some as well. |

NarkotikBuzz, thanks for the bit of advise. dsio you mentioned earlier about some pointer about reducing the temps, could you please advise. I'm thinking of replacing the thermal grease like NarkotikBuzz mentioned if I can't find a good heatsink to protect the HSI chip. What do you use to remove thermal grease? a normal dry cloth?

I found a vendor which sells the Thermalright V1 Ultra but I'm not sure that it protects the HSI chip. I've e-mailed Thermalright but they have yet to get back to me. Anyone here uses the V1 Ultra with the same card?

What a cheeky thing to do, fobbing an NV41 off as a 6800GS. It won't overclock as well as the NV42, and it wont unlock like the NV40, but it should OC to about 400+Mhz. Silicone degreaser is good for removing thermal goop, and use Arctic silver 5 on it afterwards.

I never noticed this until now when I play games, the core clock speed jumps from 351 Mhz to 450 Mhz, is this normal? I have not changed to core clock speed under riva tuner, it is still set at default 350Mhz. I removed the existing thermal grease and used to Arctic Silver 5 for the heatsink but I don't think this is the cause. What gives?

Certain NV4x cards have a low power mode that is slower than their peak 3D mode in order to save power and lower temperatures. The NV43A for example runs at 500Mhz in 3D mode, but 300Mhz in 2D / low power mode. 450Mhz is good if its stable as well. When overclocking, change the "performance 3D" clockspeed. The others make no difference. And don't underclock the card ever.
