I have a GF ti 4200 in my boys rig. It still seems to handle the 91.xx series drivers. Actually seem to wake this card up...

Those would work well if this was a Geforce 4. Unfortunately, it isn't.

You see, Geforce 4 MX chips are actually Geforce 2 chips that have been rabadged. So no pixel shaders, no vertex shaders, no 128bit DDR, and low clockspeed.

As a result you need an older driver that gives the best performance under hardware T&L, which is the 44.03. I have a special version on AOAFiles called the Omega Modified 44.03 drivers which have had a little extra performance wrangled out of them, which is a nice touch really.

If you have a Geforce, Geforce 2, Geforce 3, or Geforce 4 TI, then the best performance will always be had with those Omega 44.03s. They are the best hardware T&L / Shader Model 1.0/1.1/1.4 drivers ever made.

We've actually had whole threads full of people with Geforce 4 MX problems, all stemming from the fact that the name suggests its a real Geforce 4 when its not even close. As a result of being an NV15 rather than an NV25, all modern Nvidia drivers have stripped support for the Geforce 4 MX out completely, meaning if you try nearly any modern driver it will just say it can't install.

Now that card is old school cool.

I remember when it came out, I was on the waiting list for it, and scored one off the first shipment of them to arrive at our local. Turned me into a counter-strike god, when everyone else was still using Voodoo/TNT, or at best Geforce 256 hardware. I was maxing out my refresh rate under Vsync, at 1024x768 with some tweakery. God was that thing good.

The newest drivers are best for the Geforce 6/7 series, mainly because the two card types are exactly the same, and therefore respond the same to driver changes etc.

The Geforce FX however responds best to a certain driver, I have it written down somewhere. Under DirectX 8.1, the 44.03s will actually give the FX series the best performance possible, which is why many FX 3DMark2001SE records are held by that driver.

However for DirectX 9.0, the best drivers for performance are the 56.xx (theres one in particular), and there is a 57.xx driver as well that really made them fly. That said, if you actually use an FX class card for DirectX 9.0 rendering, you will be badly disappointed, regardless of the driver. The FX cards do however still work with current drivers, and though they will be slower than some of the older FX designed drivers, they also have many bugfixes that may make them needed.

As a general refference:

Geforce 256 / Geforce 2 = basically the same card. Hardware T&L, no pixel shaders. DirectX 7 compliant, DirectX 8.1/9.0 compatible. Best driver: 44.03 Omega modified.

Geforce 3 / Geforce 4 = basically the same card. First generation Pixel shaders. DirectX 8.0 / 8.1 compliant respectively. Great deal of muscle. Best driver: 44.03 Omega modified.

Geforce FX = Never repeated, since it was rubbish when it came out, and nothing could be salvaged from the design. DirectX 9.0 compliant (almost), DirectX 8.1 targetted. Same muscle as the Geforce 4, poorly designed, Pixel Shader 2.0A. Best driver: 44.03 (DX8.1 only) Omega modified. If you need DX9 (and you really don't) 56.xx/57.xx.

Geforce 6 / Geforce 7 = basically the same card. Third generation shader model 3.0 fully compliant. DirectX 9.0C compliant. Massively parallel with a great deal of muscle. Best driver: Currently, 91.45, but it updates all the time.

Its an NV44 core, which means it can't be unlocked. The older (somtimes used) AGP 6200s ran the same NV43 core as the 6600 and could be unlocked into pseudo 6600s.

This card cannot, and is on a different process, doesn't use a HSI bridge like the NV43 which is why its cheaper.

As far as performance goes, that card sucks fairly hard. Its memory bandwidth is massively crippled. The DDR2 it runs is as slow as hell, and it uses a 64 bit bus. Anti-Aliasing is out of the question. Aniso filtering would be possible, as long as its not too high.

Overclocking should be reasonable. Given its passively cooled, jury-rigging an 80mm fan over the passive sink would half the temperatures, and a little volt-modski would probably have it in the 450-500 territory easily.

Still doesn't solve the memory problem though. If you can, get a 128 bit 6200, or even better, buy a used Geforce 4 TI / Geforce FX 5700 or above. The fact that it has 256MiB of ram on it is just a ploy to sucker people in who think that number is impressive.

192MiB of that 256MiB is about as usefull as tits on a bull.
