TV-OUT - Best settings

So - I am currently without a monitor for my PC.
(Need to stay mobile and rent being more vital)
Using the TV for DVD watching - and it also suffices for some games.

However I am wondering if anyone has any advice on best desktop res etc settings. Currently I am using it in:
High contrast old style windows apearance
720/480 at 60 Htz (max TV supports) (although I can display at 1024/768)
Then using zooming as necessary to read pages of text.

I am using my laptop for regular surfing, work etc - so no worries if this is the best I am likely to get without forking out for a better screen.
