Resolution dodgeyness

I've got quite a crazy thing going on with my resolution at the moment on my laptop. Everything is fine if the resolution is at max (1024x768), but if I run any programs at a lower resolution, they don't enlarge, they just show using whatever-it-is-set-at number of pixels. This means i end up with a black box around it and have a really small area of the screen used.

Anyone know what i can do about this, i'm not sure what causes it, but i know it didn't do it before. Thanks.

There should be a setting, either in the BIOS or in your display drivers, that allows the display to scale the image or display it native. If it is set to native mode, then it will behave the way you describe.
