I'm not certain that wide format monitors are a great idea. For tv, sure. For computering...?

Believe me, widescreen monitors are fantastic. They allow you to essentially 'maximize' a window like you would before but still have space off to the side where you can put other things.

Examples of great uses include typing with one window while having the source you're quoting on the other side of the monitor, both quite equally large. Personally, I tend to use my browser on the left side of my monitor while keeping other windows (Skype, IM) open on the right.

I'm also in a position that watching movies on my computer is sometimes preferable to watching them on the crappy TV I've got. Widescreen monitors make use of the wide format that movies come out in. I suppose that in the end, it's mostly personal preference though.
