7600 Gt faster than 6800 GT

Might be scoring a 939 lan party board and a 3000 Athlon.

I need to pick up a video card in the 130 range. Will a 7600Gt be a better performer than say a 6800GT Agp card? Just trying to get a base point on performance.

In terms of pixel power yes, the significantly faster core even with just 12pp will outperform the 6800GT core. But it comes with only a 128bit memory bus though the memory is clocked higher than a 6800GT so you are probably looking at 30% less memory bandwidth but overall it's probably a good 20-30% faster than a 6800GT

They overclock like mad as well! The specs in my sig. And there's still gain to be made if i so wished (voltmodded to 1.4V mind you).

In benchmarks they are a faster card, however try running at 1280x1024 or above and enable 4xAA and the 7600GTs low memory bandwidth will start to hinder it.

Actually a lot of the benchmarks show it still ahead of a 6800GT.

Granted it's not ideal for resolutions of 1280x1024 with AA/AF enabled in newer titles, and HDR struggles above 1024x768, but then the same is true of the 6800GT. And in older games it can quite comfortably handle eye candy settings.

The memory bandwidth isn't crippled that much really with the high clock speed and I'm guessing some 7XXX series optimisations making the reduced bus width over the 6800GT not that big an issue.

There is still a sudden dip in performance when the texture size is increased, the 7600 cards do seem to overclock rather well though, the 6800 cards maxxed out at about 460MHz.

I did find a 7900GS for just a little more. 20 pipes and 256 memory. I assume that would be a better buy.

But honestly, the 7600gt is not worth 130? Would I be unhappy after owning my 6800? I am really trying to keep a tight budget.

Do you already have a 6800? if so I'd say it's a modest upgrade.

It would be noticably faster than a plain 6800 and is a very good choice for AGP systems

There is also the Radeon X1950 Pro in the same sort of price bracket, not sure how they compair performance wise with each other though but the Radeons specs look the better of the two

So you already have a 6800 with 16pp running in this system? Well then save your money. Yes a 7600GT or X1950pro would boost performance but the 6800 already compliments the other system specs well.

Ahh right the 939 board is a pci-e board? I'm with you now, got a little confused there it sounded like you had the S939 system going with a 6800 in it and were thinking of upgrading.

I probably did not make it very clear.

Basically I am going from my M 2400+ Skt A @ 2533
Geforce 6800 AGP

to a Athlon64 3200+ skt 939. PCI-e with maybe a 7600 GT

I'd get the X1950Pro. 7600GT is a solidly good card, I used to have one and it was a very good performer. It was about 10-15% slower than my 6800GT, but that's with a reasonable 6800GT overclock, and very minimal overclocking on the 7600GT.

Volt modded, these things fly. Id you can stretch for the X1950Pro, get it. Otherwise, 7600GT with Volt mod and better cooling is just insane.

Go for it. The 7600GT is awesome in most games (FEARCombat, BF2, CSS, FarCry, Halo, even Oblivion on modest settings). If you have at least a gig of ram, then you'll be fine (which reminds me, i've got another gig of Cosair arriving tomorrow ). Just read Tweakguides to help you choose settings, it stops a lot of unnecessary lag without compromising quality.

And yes, it's worth $130, it's about £100 in the UK ATM (about $200) so think of it as a bargain. Plus you can do your voltmod on it .

X1950Pro = R570. 80nM, 36 Shaders and the same performance as X1900XT 256.

Try, you won't be dissapointed, plus the core clocks like mad. Stretch for it, you'll thank yourself later.

The 3G Crossfire is also a good bonus. No more misfire
