Retail R600XTX pictured & benchmarked

VR-Zone

We saw some R600 cards at CeBIT but any form of photography is restricted as AMD is keeping a close watch making sure nothing is leaked outside. Nevertheless, we still managed to get some shots on the retail R600XTX (Radeon X2900 XTX) card. Also we have some preliminary benchmarks figures of the R600 XTX card vs a GeForce 8800 GTX card.

1350-800=550

800/550= 68% short of target?

Amazing, but that card is WAY too crouded and power hungry, You would have to have 2x700watt psu's or atleast a 1.2kw. This is getting rediculous, there isn't any psu's that I know of with 2 pci-e x8 connectors or 4 standard pci-e x6.

BUT its still cool.... or rather hot.....

Acutally, you'll find that silverstone, enermax, thermaltake, and a few others all offer PSU's on the shelves right now that feature "DXX" pci-e connector.

Haha, I was right 1.2kw! Dual 8 pin for your graphics cards, I just wonder how much that thing weighs!

65nM should bring it's power draw and heat output to around G80, if anything slightly below.

I doubt it. ATi doesn't seem to manage the power as well as nvidia. Obviously from the power requirements.

Power requirements are higher as this gpu will be much more efficient than G80 in rendering DX10, thereby giving a perforamnce boost...but also consuming more power, as less of the gpu will be idle in comparison to the g80(32-pixel granularity compared to 4-pixel). This means that the G80 can be using only 4 of those 32 pixels, and 28 would be idle, but in the R600, nothing would be idle.

Get it?

True, but sadly the performance boost isn't that much more... I'm just a tad disappointed as it just won't be a smart purchase, I think the price to performance won't weigh well against nvidia at this point, not enough to sway me to make a purchase any time soon anyway. I am sure I will need a new PSU as well before my next video card purchase. I guess I am looking forward to the next gen DX10 cards more than I was to the initial release. I think that will be a much more interesting market.
I was honestly a bit wary of Vista until a few weeks ago. I am pretty happy with it though, still some bugs, but overall I think this is Micro$hafts best release since win98se.
I plan on going C2D soon, but I don't think I will get a new video card for a while. At least not until the next holiday season.

Bare in mind, as Cad said, that the benchmarks or of a card 68% short of the target final specifications.

hehe. LoL. You mean MY final target specs? I only Wish they could pull it off, but i tihnk it may be my thinking might be another card.

Actually, the posted benches remind me greatly of what one of those dual-x1950 cards would do if both cores ahd all thier "pipes" enabled...

I've had $1K saved for this card since November, and even picked up an Enermax Galaxy to run it at great expense, because I thought it would be worth it.

Reminds me of the Yamato class destroyers of the Japense Navy: Overengineered, poorly thought through, and delivered too late for it to make a difference.

I really did want one of these things, but if DX10 is the only thing it stands out in, its about as useful as tits on the proverbial bull to me. I hope we hear better news at launch.

I also see where they point out that "more mature drivers" may help with performance, but that is pure speculation. I've heard that before from ATi drivers and never really saw dramatic improvements.
Now, nVidia, on the other hand, have released drivers that have shown some dramatic improvements.
I hope we don't see any foul play from either group again with "optimized" drivers for benchmarks.....both have gone there and it stained their rep for a while. Keep the e-penis crap to a minimum and deliver some good drivers with a balanced level of performance and IQ.

As short of money as they are, this is liable to be their biggest paper launch to date. I look forward to the 8900 series myself. My Enermax
Liberty 500 watt will power it up just fine thankyou
