Then I'd recommend using the x8 slot. You then have the question of whether you want to buy the x4 or x8 controller.

Problem is, the PCIe spec does not REQUIRE that the x8 slot support anything other than x8 and x1 operation; this is left up to the implementor. You'll need to research your mobo, and PROBABLY contact the manufacturer to find out if it supports x4 operation in the x8 slot.

Once you've answered that question, I would absolutely recommend using a RAID controller with on-board cache RAM; unfortunately, this puts you squarely in the several-hundred-dollar category of RAID controllers. However, if performance truly is of prime importance, the extra cost will be worth it.

Gizmo,

Thanks for the info. You pretty much confirmed what I had guessed.

I was thinking this: http://www.promise.com/product/produ...product_id=171
would be about right.

Opinions please?

As with the Highpoint controllers, my last experience with Promise was some time ago (about 8 years) and was rather unpleasant. I understand there are a number of system integrators that use them now though. Again, my best recommendation is to find some reviews on the web.

Specs look decent, although I think I'd like to see a bit more than 64 MiB of cache ram. It would be good to see if you can find some benchmarks, though.
