Ati Radeon Hd 2900 Xt 1024mb

Digit-Life show us the real deal:

We understand why AMD doesn't allow to sell cards like HD 2900 XT 1GB. Even after our first article of this series it was clear that the problem was not in memory capacity - 512 MB of memory was quite sufficient even for top graphics cards. There is nothing wrong with memory bus width either. The problem is in the core.

Is this a "physical defect" in the core of the GPU? Kinda sounds like it. Just what AMD does not need. Idjits or what?

It's not just that, the Core design is quite ineffecient unless it's being completly maxed out.

Technically, it only has 64 Shaders, but each shaders has a cluster of five "Stream Processors" However, from what I gather each Cluster needs to be at either 100% or 0% utilisation. Individual Processors within the cluster cannot be used.

The Memory bus was a great bit of tech, but it's simply too early, we're really not at the point where we're seein the effects of the increased bus width. This is why ATi risely chose to make their upcoming RV670 (55nm Die Shrink of R600) 256bit only.

Although, like the drivers or not, the R600 is steadily getting faster with each driver revision. I think they're finally coming to grips with what a complex beast they've created.

I read a comparison yesterday between the 2900 and the 8800. The flagship from each camp put out some impressive numbers. Of course the 8800 had it's way with the offering from AMD. But the 2900 came in at 400 dollars less. Curious to see if a mature driver will help at all.
