No audio Device

This is probaly a very basic mistake but is driving me nuts. Finish a new built yesterday (Biostar NF61S micro 754)mobo, AMD 3200+, 1Gb generic ram, 250 Deskstar hdd, samsung dvd/cd/rom.
Boot from the start nicely (almost always has problems), install drivers from provided dsk. Everything works but the audio. "No audio device" on control panel (sounds), "?" in the device manager. Uninstall/reinstall a couple of times, no go. Download two diferent AC97 audio drivers, nada.

What's going on???

check the BIOS.

On some you can disable the audio. Next, with no drivers, check the device manager, windows should see it, but it may be an unknown device.

Audio is enable on BIOS. Device Manager recognize the device (is in the list with a "?" besides. Have down load 4 diferents drivers (for the chipset and for the device itself, Biostar, Realtek, nVidia). The dam driver won't complete the installation process.
With nVidia goes all the way, reebot and nothing. With the other ones it halts midway and start asking for some files[" the file ksusser.dll on unknow device is needed. Type the path where the file...yada, yada"] Use the mobo install dsk and the WinXP to see if it's there,...nada. Uninstall all nVidia drivers and start over again, nope.
Maybe I should buy a cheap sound card, charge it to the client and move on with my life. Spend more than 6hrs on this yesterday.

Hate to give up and to charge for something that it should be there.

I like to be able to help, and I have recieved enough help here with my own problems.

A community that works I believe is one that helps each other.

Also I need something to take my mind off my own computer problems. Especially after throwing a tantrum at MS again last night. Main machine now boots directly to ubuntu, XP is there but not sure for how much longer.

Be sure to give XP to someone who might otherwise pay Bill for it...Hey! I'm pretty sure it was Bill who first suggested it!

I would, but everyone I know seems to be moving either to Ubuntu, or Fedora.

We even have an official Ubuntu project at work. We need to show that its viable in the workplace in an enterprise system. There are very few people in the uni who couldn't make the move, mainly because they use certain functionality in MS Office, that isn't avaliable in OpenOffice yet. But as OO gets better, the number diminishes. Also XP via citrix will be used for a couple of crucial apps.

Helpful, tantrums, Linux, community services... my kind of guy. Was going tobuy a cheap sound card and charge it but I don't think is fair. I would the the rig to where I buy the mobo and let them deal with it. Un less it gona take a week or so (very common here).

Send a message via MSN to Samuknow

Make sure you remove all of those old failed drivers. Even if they do not work, they will be there. Boot into safe mode and run DCP.

Scope your manual for the exact make of the sound chip. If you can't find the driver, post the info here. I am sure someone here can come up with it.

that link I posted wasn't to the AC97 drivers, but to ones closer to that chip. The auto address parser on here now turned it into 'realtek'.

I managed to walk away. It's MS's fault, not my hardware.
But there's nothing like releaving stress like a good tantrum at the offender.

Personally, if the device doesn't work exactly as advertised - I want my money back / replacement to what was advertised. So far, only MS has refused, but for $12.50 and I had to sign a form saying due to piracy I can't give it back, I may forgive just that.

Even the ads where they state 'results not typical' - threats of the commerce commission, fraud, etc usually make them see my point of view. The commerce commission has hit people (as in put them out of business financially / made them basically bankrupt) before, and seem to enjoy it. They have done it to people just plain unable to fully back up their claims, let alone stating openly that they pretty much were untrue.

Only a week? Usually here we get, 5 to 10 days. Not stated is thats 'working days' so its 1-2 weeks. Rarely is it actually under 1 week (unless you are a business customer / pay for 'express' service). Sometimes if you don't ring before the second week is up, you have to wait another. Or you will recieve either a weak excuse / the product on the last day.

We have that kind here. They would take a load of work/machines they know that can't not deliver on time. You describe them perfectly. But we also have some responsible people, we even have same day service with no extra charge. Those are a minority but is the people I recoment If I can't do the job.
Went to the store and sit down with him for about an hour. It was a no go. Leave the machine and went back some 3 hours later. He was still trying. We try with a sound card (Yamaha), ...nada.Now we are entering the twightlight zone. Any way, pick the machine and bring it home. Will do a fresh install. If that doesn't work I'll take out the mobo and take it back. I know I been kind of 'soft', but, what can I say.

Pretty much all you have done is what I would do.

One thing I always try is a live CD of linux. If sound works in there, and not in MS - MS is at fault.

I noted the the drivers were described as AC97 - I believe the chpset on your board is the realtek HD codec - which I don't think is the same thing - or have I got this wrong ?

Try the realtek HD codec...nada. Also try with a sound card and it was a no go. I believe is the mobo, will ask for warranty. THK for taking a shot JimF.
