These cards can do a lot with good cooling and a little voltage.

on standard cooling / voltage 1.15Ghz ram 400-425Mhz core is reasonable to good, 1.1Ghz ram 400Mhz core is minimum.

With a volt mod, 450Mhz core 1.2Ghz ram (Ultra Extreme speed) is very doable. Because its a 16 pipe card, it gains alot from modest OCs.

whats the difference between volt modding and having your motherboard force that amount on the card?

One would think that the voltage regulation circuitry on the Vidcard would correct an overvoltage from the mainboard.

You should be able to check temps through your driver control panel.

Let us know what they are. You can also DL ATI tool from our DL section and that is a real good stress test to get the temps up. Leave the driver CP open to monitor. I find the temp monitor in ATI tool to be a little whacky somethings.

6800GT are old cards, and invariably, as a chip gets older, it doesn't OC as well. Main cause is the fact that the thermal interface material dries out, and dust accumulates on the 6800GT cooler, dramatically increasing temps.

Some of the dust in m 6800GT cooler was so thick and solidified that I had to carve it out with a hunting knife, and it had blocked several air channels.

well according to samuknow i dled ati tool and using the 3d test my temps ranged from 60c-71c and thats on stock clock speeds v1.25 and with a stock heatsink

diso: i bought this card brand new just a few weeks ago so there was no dust collection at all.

What name brand card is this? That way I can have a look at the cooler. Cooling is a big part of over clocking. I have water cooled for many years due to this. A better cooler will net you better clocks to a point. Even on extreme cooling, hardware has it's limits.

6800GT does produce a bit of heat ~80W so cooling is quite important.

Get a brand name PSU (Enermax, PC Power & Cooling, Seasonic, Thermaltake etc) your quad core, with a high power consumption motherboard like a 680i, and a high power consumption card like a 6800GT (and an 8800GT when you get one) need a decent brand name PSU with a reasonable rating 480W Enermax would be much safer on that rig than your current one, but 620W or so would be better.

I am running a Ultra 550 and it does fine. Again not running an 880 or a quad core but I have had tons of lights and fans and a water pump and OC the living crap out of it.

Also i have an antec 900(case) with all the fans connected + a windowfan. So is it my psu? from SamuKnow his ultra 550w is just fine for him but does quad+my mobo+6800gt too much for a 500w?

Also is the BFG stock cooler sufficent for me to push core clocks of 400+ w/o over heating problems?

I would say that the cooler will be holding you back. At least the mem has some cooling on it. You might fair from a 120mm fan moving air across the card...

DO you get them at stock?

If not....you have the unfortunate luck of a card that is not a good over clocker. It happens sometimes.
