4850 vs 9800 GTX/GTX+

I am considering the purchase of a new video card, one that costs around $200 or so, give or take a few dollars. Both the new ATi 4850 and the nVidia 9800 GTX/GTX+ fall into my price range.

Which one would you get and why? This would go into an Opteron 165 running at 2.7, 2GB DDR400, etc. Current video card is a 7800 GT and I'd like to bump it up without breaking the bank but with the ability to run the latest generation games. My current card runs Doom3, Quake4, HL2, etc pretty well but performance in FEAR seems to be middling and anything newer than that is a bit jerky. Well ok Quake Wars runs pretty decent.

It seems like in some of the reviews I have seen, the nVidia cards are ahead on some game benchmarks and the ATi card is ahead on others.

Some factors:

-I've always had nVidia cards, for the last 10 years or so, before that I had a Voodoo2 and a Voodoo1, back in the Quake 1&2 days. I really feel like with another nVidia card I could just update the drivers to the latest Forceware and then switch out the cards with minimal fuss.

-My board is "SLI certified", would this cause a problem with an ATi card? Certainly running Crossfire would never be an option, or would it?

-However, looking at the reviews I've seen, the ATi uses less power. This is a consideration as I don't want to have to switch out my power supply. It's a Antec TruePower Trio 550w. Of course this PSU does pretty well with the power-thirsty 7800 GT I have now. The system is rock solid stable as is.

Opinions welcomed

my 9600gt plays all the games out now all on high setting so i am guessing the 9800gtx will pay all the games they release in the next year or 2 max

Depends, what motherboard is it?

If it were a new build I'd more than certainly recommend the 4850, as it's going to mature much better with new driver releases, but since your current setup is ready for Sli, the 9800 may be a better choice, so long as your PSU can handle it.

Something else to keep in mind...
Nvidia now has PhysX enabling drivers so this is a BIG plus in gaming performance! I'd go with the Nvidia card and drivers...
Even my 8800GTS performs very well with the Geforce 177.35 PhysX enabling drivers!
I'm now seeing stuff I never saw before.
Example: Half Life 2: Episode 2

that's not the only 9800GTX under 200...the 4850 has really changed the game, so to say.

eVga Nf41.

I have a 550 watt Antec Truepower Trio.

The 4850 does use less power...

I am using PhysX in UT 3 - I have some amazing maps with stuff that until now could be only seen in movies. If you guys are really interested I could make a short movie from it for you guys to see.

Source uses Havok, not PhsyX, so it's all CPU.

If you listen to the Naration (Comentary) while playing the game they state they use PhysX in the game...
So is there 2 different kinds of Physics applications for games?
Never the less it's very cool looking with outstanding graphics quality and effects with everything cranked up to full!
Too bad screenshots don't show this...

There are three types of physics dude.

1.Havok physics
2.Ageia PhysX
3.Nvidia PhysX

I saw the explosion in HLEp2 and is a child compared to what happens in UT3.

Thanks! Yea I like it too.. The game is Half-Life 2: Episode Two. The second expansion release for HL2! They really have improved their graphics engine for the game since the original!!!

Those screenshots are NOT touched up at all & that's is exactly what I see on my screen!

I think what really makes it look so good is the Geforce 200 series driver 177.35 installation mod. (mine)
The modded driver is still on Rapidshare if you want it.
Nvidia driver version 177.35 WHQL XP 32bit mod
RapidShare: Easy Filehosting
Not sure if it will install on your current card or not, you just got to give it a try but it works flawlessly on my 8800GTS!

Few more screenies of HL2:EP2.
8800GTS settings: All graphics settings on KILL 1680x1050.
Card clocks speeds using EVGA Precision OC Utility. (GPU-Shader-Memory) 621/1512/1026, 67 FPS average.
1. Citadel after core explosion (the end of EP1)
2. Dodge Charger (the car you use in this game to get around instead of buggy) & White Forest Base with car in forground.
3. Vortigon carrying Alyx that's been injured by a Hunter which is a Robot that hunts down and kills the resistance fighters.

I might be mistaken, but I believe that Nvidia bought out Ageia for their PhysX and that's why they have it now.
IF so then there is only 2.

What explosion? I've played HL2: EP2 now for the last 2 days from beginning to end twice and haven't seen any "Explosion" on it...
I'm taking about scenes with the Advisors and the Train Bridge collapse. Scenes like that where they are using their PhysX engine.

Yeah, Ageia and nVidia's Physx are the same thing. If only Ut3 was worth playing, if I wanted Enhanced Physics on console ports, I'd petition for DOA PC edition and watch some boobies.

Sorry Muff1n, gotta disagree. HL2 uses Havok, and the Source SDK comes compiled with it. Gabe Newell already slated the Ageia on it's release and find it highly unlikely they'd utilise it.

PhysX Games List

Also, I lol'd

In the Developers Commentary they just say Physics engine...they don't say who makes it, just that it's used.
As I said before, "Never the less it's very cool looking with outstanding graphics quality and effects with everything cranked up to full!"
Now if the Physics engine is Havok so be it! Still looks very cool in the game!!!

Word on the Wire is nVidia is helping to run their Cuda software on ATi cards.
