Best vid for $100

I was just told i could have $100 to spend on my box! Tell me there is no God!
I've got a geforce 7300LE PC-E and that ain't much.[I think my FX 5200 AGP was a better card!] Recommendations please.

8800 GT would be good card.

The 8800GT would be a decent choice, might also be able to find an ATI 3850 for less than $100 with a rebate that would bring it down to the $75 range.

I decided to go a different route. as most know I don't game so as much as testosterone says get biggest, baddest, fastest, best, I usually do settle down.
I relay want to improve on this 7300LE but I don't need a screamer. I think i can get a nice upgrade in video AND get a sound card. On short notice [meaning I haven't had a lot of time to get reviews on either card yet] this is what I've come up with. $94 at Compuvest.

512MB PNY Verto Geforce 8500GT PCI Express x16 Sli Ready VCG85512GXPB
Creative Labs Soundblaster X-FI Xtreme Audio 7.1 24bit 96KHZ PCI

Any thoughts or criticisms please jump in!

The 8500 wouldn't be much of an improvement over the 7300.

In what areas is your current card lacking? What do you need your next card to do better?

The X-fi xtreme is also not a good choice. It does not do onboard audio processing, it is all done through software (CPU Power is used)

When working within a tight budget, it's important to get something that will hold you over until the next allotted spending cycle, not just something that fits within the budget. I also try to buy components that will still have a decent resale value, which helps me from one upgrade cycle to the next. Meaning a $50 video card today will be worth about 10 bucks in a month, a $100 card will still bring in 50 or 60 bucks..

Perhaps one day we will discover while an 'X-FI Extreme Audio' is inferior than an old 'Audigy 1' or a GeForce 7300 is inferior to a much older 5200

Information gathered has taken all the indecision out of the issue. I'm saving now for an 8800 or maybe a 9600, a little closer look will be done. I've learned how much faster this rig will fold with a card like that, well worth spending extra in that direction even if it is beyond anything that I need. ccp, ya should have told me! It would have been a bummer to by a cheaper video @ sound card and then find out how much faster a good video card will fold.

PS.
I did find this site that gave the specs on all the nvidia cards so you can compair. It's just what I needed!

Other than their commonality, what good are Creative sound cards? Gawd, I HATE their bloated drivers from hell! Maybe a ~$12 Yamaha sound card is the answer? Seriously.

Might be, but that investigation is going on hold until I get either the 8800gt or the 9600gt. puting as many irons in the fire as I can figure towards that. The card is realy over blown for my needs but a folding we will go!!
Made $20 yesterday towards the folding fund, moving up!

This is a hard one for me bro. I just can't see purchasing hardware that far outside your needs for the purpose of folding. While it is a good cause, don't put it that far above your personal needs or enjoyment.

Agreed!
Either that or start gaming with that powerful of a card.
Too bad you're not willing to go with an ATi card.
"Best Bang for the buck" right now and they DO have very good graphics cards!
Once you get to know your way around "their" control panel its very easy to use & update drivers.

I've owned 2 of them & as a matter of a fact think I'm going to go with two ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 in crossfire on my next card upgrade since these are kickin cards and Intel Chipsets supports this including my current board & PSU...

I think you guys have lost sight of the whole picture.

I'm going to get a new video card. This 7300LE suxx. It can't even keep up with scrolling. Right there we are talking a base figure around $50 to $60.

I am going Nvidia. I have three reasons for this.

1.What little I know of vid cards it's about Nvidia cards. yes, i could learn the ATI cards but I'm satisfied with what I've got, and I'm lazy. There are things more important than learning about something I don't want.
2. I am folding. That is just a fact. Buying The Nvidia card gives me a fold that approx. 14x what it is now.
Bottom line is I spend $40 t0 $50 over what i was going to spend anyway. Maybe less.
I see that as a pretty good deal. Worth while.
3. Ati doesn't help with th the fold, Nvidia does. No brainer!

Sounds good to me dude. If you are going to buy one anyway, I will stick to my original recommendation.

Just so you know, the GPU2 client runs on ATI cards 2400 and up.

OK, I thought it was just Nvidia but that doesn't make any difference. I'm staying Nvidia. With them I know enough of what the numbers mean to feel comfortable. With ATI I'm lost, so Nvidia it is!

It's probly going to be the 8800gt but the 9600gt isn't out of the running. Today I'll put thier specs side by side so I can see where there different. I will probly have a question or two about that. From what I need and what I've seen about both cards-I think it will probly be decided by price at the time I'm ready to buy. Right now either one is about $90 after MIR.
