Video Card question

How does one go about choosing between nvidia or ati as far a video cards goes.

I see that ati cards have alot more stream procs while nvidia has hier cpu frequencies.

for instance, what is a better choice, an ati 4830 or a gforce 9600GT?

these are about the same price but it seems to me that the ati card is much better.

Right now, I'd go with ATI, simply because nVidia are having some serious manufacturing issues, specifically with chips dying after a year or so. Though this seems to be affecting laptops much more than desktops, it's still a problem.

Also, ATI are actively engaged with the Open Source community to build a version of ATI drivers that is Open Source and still offers all the features and performance of the closed-source ATI drivers (which they can't Open Source for licensing reasons; apparently, they are using technology they licensed from someone else somewhere in the drivers).

Beyond that, look at the benchmarks for the cards. While benchmarks are always to be viewed with a healthy dose of scepticism, if you consistently see card A scoring higher than card B across multiple benchmarks and on multiple review sites, it's a pretty safe bet that card A is the better performer.

thanks for the info.

looking at a review of the best video cards for the money on toms hardware. an ati 4830 is on par with a 8800gt which they same is the same as a 9800gt. with this in mind i gess the 9600gt is out the picture.

Also depends on if you want to use physx or not. Ati is the cheaper route also. Nvidia physx
