Exclamation Nvidia drivers V196.75, Critical problem!!!

Big thanks to Kaitain for bringing this to our attention!!!

According to Phoronix the bug is present in both Windows and Linux versions of the driver.
Oh Crap!!! Thanks for the heads up on this!!!
I'm going back to the beta drivers right before this...
I now have v196.34 installed instead, BUT I kept the new PhysX drivers...

Quote from Nvidia!
"We are aware that some customers have reported fan speed issues with
the latest 196.75 WHQL drivers on NVIDIA.com. Until we can verify and
root cause this issue, we recommend that customers stay with, or return
to 196.21 WHQL drivers. Release 196.75 drivers have been temporarily
removed from our website."

This means to me remove these drivers right away!!!
If Nvidia has removed the drivers from the download site it can't be good!!!
I confirmed they have removed drivers v196.75 & are offering v196.21 again instead!~

This effects Linux as well, due to it being in a part of the platform non-specific code. My laptop is unaffected as its fanspeed control is separate from the GPU but my desktop did have the issue.

Actually the thanks goes to Kaitain as he's the one that originally posted this.
I just reposted it in this section because it was getting more attention here & I knew it would be seen faster!
I didn't want any of our members burning up their graphics card!!!

But what I can guess is that if its triggered by the driver then a failed driver setting can damage a card by keeping the fan speed at a certain level (say 50%) while the gcard heats up.
I guess I came pretty close to the truth

Yeah man except that I wasnt using the latest drivers and I just found out that the Zalman on my card is having just two wires instead of three. But in the end is all good when it finishes good.

There's nothing definite about it. Reading around, there's an awful lot of finger pointing going on, everything from it being specifically Blizzard games to this driver, to particular combinations of game, card design and driver.

I understand that not all card designs make use of software fan control, implementing it either in the card's BIOS or just using a fixed-speed fan (2-wire fan).

Worth looking at how it was built first
