Angry Nvidia 257.21 can damage your card?

I have a Gigabyte GTS 250 with a special Zalman cooler attached from factory.

1.Using latest driver and adjusting the settings through nvidia performance tab
2. when turning the fan to 100% on manual and getting in the game
3. in a few seconds fan will be reset (whithout any warning) to 4 percent and the gfxcard will be damaged in a short time due to overheating.

Nvidia wake the fuc up!!!

Similar feedback on the NVidia site:
Official NVIDIA 257.21 Display Driver Feedback Thread, Desktop and Notebook GPUs - NVIDIA Forums

I seem to recall this is the second time NVidia driver enhancements went pear-shaped in recent memory ? - so whql really means 3rd time lucky

Thanks for the warning - I hope your card is still in warranty - I don't think my card 'features' fan control but I'd rather not find out the way you did.

Only because I know what heavy artifacting means I've escaped with the card unharmed. Thing is that even after switching to desktop the cooler of the gfx card remains at minimum rotation (close to none). In a minute after getting into any game you can lose the card for good !

Arrow

I suppose that this must effect cards that are newer as I haven't experience this at all on my 8800GTS & this is gaming for hours on end OCing the whole time with no change in temps or fan speeds when set at 100%.

Are you using EVGA Precision to do this?
Btw, the newest version is v1.9.4.

One other point...
I have ALL of my OC settings setup on hotkey profiles (along with fan speeds) & this is the way I set a graphics OC for set game
instead of doing it manually each time as it's so much faster & easier.

EDIT: I've been taking the time to read through ALL of the posts on the Nvidia forum 257.21 driver thread & it seems others have run
in to the fan stopping problem as well...Not Good...
After reading that this is more than one instance including yours Chris, I decided for the time being to go back to v197.45 to stay on the safe side till their next release...

Crap! I liked the performance of this driver too!

1.
"Since driver 197.57 I have a issue with those drivers... I have a XFX GTX280, and I don't know why, but with those drivers I have small stutterings and glitches... but the worse off all is that it simply stops the freaking vga cooler... don't have a clue why is that, since driver 197.45 and down this kind of stuff never happen... with this driver since is WHQL, I had hope that it ends, but it simply stopped my vga cooler like the beta one.

The weird thing of all this is that when I turn the computer on the cooler is working normally, but when I go gaming it simply stops the cooler.

Config:
PII 940 - M3N HD HDMI - 8GB DDr2 - GTX280 - W7x64"

2.
"Anyone had temperature problems?
I have 71 degrees with normal use on my 2 9800gt in sli (internet ... office...)"

3.
"well.... I tried Fallout 3 for 10 minutes, more or less.... and I reached 95 CĀ° degrees (It means 203 F) , .... no automatic fan control worked....
70-75 degrees without doing anything...

XPS (Dell Inc XPS 630i)
Windows 7 (Ultimate)32b
Nforce 650i sli
CPU IntelĀ® Core™2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz
Video Adapter 2x NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT Memory 512 MBytes SLI"

4.
"Do NOT install this driver. It has some serious bugs.
It gave me a blue screen and after rebooting my videocard was broke.
I'm using a 8800GTX.

I am using those drivers but my cards are both water cooled. Stays a nice 45 gaming in SLI. I have had a couple of crashes since I have installed these drivers. I like the control panel setup for SLI and PhysX. I will try the older drivers and see if the crashes stop.

I am using the 257.21's on my 260GTX with no such issues what so ever.

I tell you that you can go and get the new 258.49's as they just released.
The new driver is located over at guru3d.

download from Guru3D.com

Perhaps these will fix you up.

Hey JimF any card's fan can be controlled by adding a little program such as rivatuner or msi afterburner or a whole host of programs that will monitor your card temps, set clock speeds and even adjust voltage on your card.

No one should ever have to run their fan at 100% to keep it from melting down. If you do then I recommend a fan or 2 on the side cover just below the vid card to stuff more air in the case for the vid card fan to work with.

I relly like MSI's Afterburner. Here is a pic of it controlling my PNY 285GTX while folding. you can see that I use it to set clocks and my fan speed. The higher clocks of course make the card fold faster and the higher fan speed keeps everything cool.

Just for fun (that & curiosity) I went ahead & modified an installed the Quadro drivers to see what kind of performance I got with them.

They actually work really well for Forceware drivers!
That's the highest I've ever seen my CPU score & this is @ 3.30GHz!

I also noticed that Flashplayer was using the GPU more so the videos were smoother with much less CPU usage!

Of course you have to manually install the PhysX drivers as they don't come come with it & you have to use the modified NV_DISP file with them to get the drivers installed but that's about it.

Results of my Vantage bench below...

No problems here running either the 257.21 or the Quadro 258.49.

I downloaded the Quadro from nVidia after I saw a post about it on the folding forum. I had to mod the 258.49 to run on XP with my 470 (didn't know a mod was posted at guru3d at the time, but it's easy enough to do myself). It seems to work fine.

No gains as far as folding production, but I do see a bit better temps, perhaps 3 degrees or so...I might keep this one for a bit.

Thumbs up

I've been gaming for hours on end using these Nvidia 258.49 Quadro drivers & I like them a lot!
These drivers seem to use more GPU on HD flash vids (using the newest flash drivers v10.1.53.64) too so you get much smoother framerate! (Hulu or Youtube for example )
I'm going to keep these drivers until Nvidia's next driver release as I'm having very good results with these!

No issues with temps or the fan speed either.

Good stuff, thanks Weldzilla!
