Its a perfectly good working speaker and satellites.
So, I may be able to convert it all with a new amp of some sort.
Thats what NASA said before the sattelites came down. Apparently they disagree!

PS Have you tried installing linux on the amp?...just to...make sure...

It never ends with Chris.
Maybe I'll take the electronics out again and check the Power Supply for bad caps.
Still, it was pretty complex in there. I can't imagine taking it apart and being able to put it back together again

I found a "workaround" for now.
I happen to have a cheap GE powered computer subwoofer with RCA jacks.
So I plugged my powerstixx left & right speakers into it. Works fine. Can't quite get the volume, but they are working.

I'll keep my eye open for a decent sub $100 Sub Woofer with 5.1 RCA jacks. I'm not sure if they are common, but I've seen em with ole-fashioned speaker ports.
Maybe I could just cut the RCA's off and use the wires like old-fashioned speakers.

I was looking at one of these Pyle Pro mini amplifiers...
I could get a couple of these for my satellites
Pyle Pro PTA1 30W
It has all the RCA connectors and even a volume. This would work for Left & right (front & surround) speakers, but what do I do about Subwoofer and Center?
My sound card only has one 1/8" stereo output for Sub & center. One channel is Sub, one channel is center.

3W RMS per channel seems under powered!

I wouldn't bother with those.

Yeah it probably is, but the crappy GE subwoofer I'm using now to power those satellites is probably not any better. I'm not a HUGE audiophile because I can't really afford the "nice" equipment.
I just need something to power my satellites so they are getting some use.
Othewise they are collecting dust...

There is a more powerful Pyle Pro but it doesn't have RCA outputs which means I will have to cut off my Male RCA jacks and use the wire instead.
I don't want to do that... because what if I could get the original subwoofer fixed?

For the leads, you could just get some female RCA connectors with trailing leads.

For example: Amazon.com: 2 RCA Male / 2 RCA Female, Cable Extension 12 ft: Electronics

Then just cut the male ends off those.

For what two of those amps cost you could buy a much better 2nd hand amp.

You might find a good car amplifier with 4 channels, just power it using the 12v rail on an old PC PSU.

Thats what I wanted to HEAR!
Some splicing and an old PSU... hmm interesting.
I'll see if there is a tutorial online.
That would totally save me money!

I wonder if an old PSU would work on my powered subwoofer that went bad?

Careful of that one - I've tried similar in the past and had lots of issues due to earth loops.

Another thought is that there are some interesting class D amps around these days. Sure Electronics (in China) do an interesting looking 6x100W amp board - you can pick them up from Parts Express if you don't want to order from China. You'll still need to provide volume control, power supply, connectors and an enclosure though.

Hmm, thats a bit above what I'm willing to pay.
I'm thinking that low powered Pyle Pro will do the trick. I will probably use it for the surround speakers anyways...
I won't need a lot of power for those and I don't crank them anyways.
But for the front & center speakers I will need something with a little more power.
I've seen some Powered subwoofers online: New 250W 2.1 Home Theater Surround Speaker System w/Sub
Nothing special, but better than what I currently have....

And probably more like 25W, rather than 250W, given the figures look like maximum power output (bit like testing the top speed of a car down a steep hill with a hurricane blowing from behind), rather than a more realistic RMS figure.

oh well, you don't happen to have an amp or powered sub you're willing to part from?
