Hardware or driver overclocking?

I have a gf4 Ti4400 and using rivatuner.

It gives you the option to overclock the card using either hardware or driver. Is there a difference between the two and if so why?

I've tried both and the driver option seems to be marginally quicker.

Good question, still haven't seen an answer (or if I have I have forgot ).

I always use driver overclocking ...
