Screen Distortion

I have a Gainward GF4 TI 4200. This is a killer card. I have been haveing a strange thing happen lately that all of a sudden during desktop activities the screen becomes distorted. Like a yellow and pink checkerboard. And eventually locks up . The mouse still moves even though it is a big square pointer on the screen. I have not had this problem yet during gaming. I am running XP and the Omega detonator drivers. The drivers cured some other probs but I am not sure if this is related to the drivers.

 

I may try a diff driver set. Has anyone run into this before?

I have when the card was overclocked too high, your guess is as good as mine. Driver errors usually result in a BSOD, not reboots or distortion (though nothing's out of the question).

I agree with pinky- 300-500???? I coulndt get one to 280-500 stable!

Well this is with everything back to stock speeds. Processor and video. I thought the same thing. Plus the first thing I do if I have a prob is kill the OC. The strange thing is, I am keeping a log of what I am doing when this happens, and the only time so far it has happened is during surfing in IE. 3 times since I have been logging. Played some Q3 online for over an hour and no probs. Why 2D apps? Set AGP to 1X and disabled Side band addressing. So far all seems fine.

Could a flaky PS cause probs like this? My 3.3V is tripping @ 3.6V.

I'm assuming you've installed windows updates, right? 4-in-1 driver updates, directx 8.1 etc... like I said, at this point your guess is as good as mine . Welcome to the mystery of blue smoke .

PS-- if it was a power supply, I'd expect this to happen when playing games/3d apps as they require more from cpu and gpu which places more strain on a PSU.

I will try to reinstall the VIA drivers and DX 8.1.
