Take the heatsink off the 9700 pro?

How did you do it? I need some advice since I don't want to go storming in an d break the card. I tried pliers to squeeze the end of the clips that poke through the holes but no joy.

If you have the fastenerd through, it will just be frag tape holding the thing on, it should just pull off, though it may require a fair bit of force. a lot of people seal graphics cards into bags, with as much air squeezed out as possible and pop them in the freezer for a few hours. take it out, give the sink a sharp twist and it should pop off. Just make sure you leave the card somewhere warm and dry to get rid of any residual condensation. its best to leave to dry for a couple of days

Thx m8. I always find that after posting the question, then I do it myself. Lo and behold I had it off! I got the complete run down now of my card:

PCB markings pn 109-94200-11
Sticker markings pn 1024-2c00-00-at
small sticker markings pn 1029420611 064259

Ram Chips K4D26323RA-GC2A
GC2B On r9700

GPU core
215R8CBGA 13F
G24685.1
0232AA
Taiwan

Which codes mean what?

BGA = Ball grid array style ram?

I am just going to file down the heatsink to clear the shim and make a marker before a file. I'll put paste on the aluminium shim and place the heatsink in place then I'll have my marker. I think my core probably had quite good contact anyway, but it must improve if I take out the thermal pad and replace with shinitsu paste. I am also considering a swiftech gpu pelt.

I am not advertising - its just my system spec. I am saving space too. I will have a look at some other sigs. I think you must have made a mistake!
