| Overclocking a Connectix B/W webcam! Ok, I know it's sad, but it didn't cost anything to do! First, you'll need an old connectix B/W webcam. Identify which end is the camera (hint: it looks like a ball), and which end is the parallel port connector. http://www.hawks.dircon.co.uk/aoa/image1.jpg You'll see four tabs on one side of the connector. Start by gently applying pressure to the top half of the shell, and prise the two clips nearest the D connector apart. As this is an old camera, if you can't manage it, I find a hammer works pretty well too. Once you've got the thing open, or smashed into a million peices, this is what you might see! http://www.hawks.dircon.co.uk/aoa/image2.jpg Isn't it pretty? You need to pull those two silver screws out if they haven't already fallen out and rolled under the sofa. You are doing this on the sofa right? Once they're safely stored under the sofa, gently lift the board out. There's nothing holding in place, so if it seems a little stiff, consider applying much more force. http://www.hawks.dircon.co.uk/aoa/image3.jpg Next, warm up your soldering iron, and remove the highlighted part. It's not actually sticking up in the air like this, but don't let that stop you. Use a small jewellers screwdriver to gently lift one side of the crystal as you heat the solder pads. If you don't have a small jewellers screwdriver, use the screwdriver you used to put the aircon up with. It's not like this is a sensitive electronic device. Once you've managed to remove the crystal, look around for another device to steal the crystal from. I chose to open up the DSL router to borrow the crystal from, as it's obviously fast, and that's what we want our webcam to be, right? http://www.hawks.dircon.co.uk/aoa/image5.jpg You'll need to turn the board over, and apply your soldering iron to the pointy bits on the bottom. It doesn't matter too much if you can't remember which way round it goes, or if it won't come back through the board. Just pull harder on the top. If the legs stay in the DSL router board, don't worry, as the webcam is all surface mount anyway, and it makes it easier to solder back in. Once you've done that, don't worry about putting it back together until you've tested the webcam. With a little bit of luck, you should discover your connectix now runs at the same speed your pr0n feed does! How excellent is that? Next issue, we're going to be looking at the eyeball bit of the webcam, and seeing how we can add bits to that so we can see in the dark, and through some clothes. AidanII. P.S. No routers were harmed in the making of this, and the webcam still works despite the 5% overclock. Don't attempt to do this unless you want to write off both your DSL router, your computer and your webcam. Yes, I know that's three things! Once again, I've been foiled by a lack of co-operation from the forum. You'll just have to click on the images!
