Increasing optical mouse sample rate.

Well, I disassembled my M$ Intelimouse Explorer in search of a crystal to up the sample rate, but none was found. I'm wondering if I can swap one of the resistors just off one of the eye IC to up the sample rate. Anyone know anything?

I'd be surprised if there wasn't some clock in there! It may just be a cheap ceramic resonator rather than a crystal. If you fancy taking some pics, I could take a look (;

The disadvantage of bringing the scanning rate up is the CCD requires more light to make the same exposure level, but I'm sure that you could increase the brightness!

I'm not actually sure what you want to acheive by bringing up the scanning rate though, cuz generally it's already pretty high!

I can swap a resistor out for one with less impedance, first I will need to see what kind of voltage the LED is getting now though. I'm considering swapping the LED for a blue one as well. The blue LEDs typically give off more lumens. A blue LED could cause some issues, as the eye is probably designed to function optimally with red light, but it can't hurt to try.

You might like to try an IR emitter instead before you try the blue LED. Most CCD and CMOS sensors are more sensitive to IR than to other wavelengths, unless they have a filter.

Perhaps if the IR emitter works well, you could just add the blue LED for eyecandy?
