PIII in a Mac color classic

It's alive... (Maniacle laughter)

I had a problem with paint incompatability. (Primer came off when I sprayed on the top coat.) A whole lot of sanding later, the machine is starting to look pretty decent again. I will be submitting my article on this mod to PC-Critic as soon as it is all together and painted. (I am using it to post this.)

It doth kick arse..

I couldn't resist giving you guys a peek at it. (I am still scared to paint the CD drive... )

720x576 is the res I am running on it. 640x480 is all but unusable, and 800x600 a little much... This is really not rocket science. Anyone can do this mod. You need a dremel, and a very steady hand, and probably two classics to get it right, just like me..

I will be posting the article... I just really wanted to get some proof posted. As far as I know, this is the only one of these ever built. It doesn't really even seem possible when you look at all the stuff that has to fit inside this thing.

I am a glutton for punnishment. I have my eye on an SE/30.. (even smaller... has 9" B&W screen that would need to be swapped out for a color. )

That is a textured metallic paint.. looks like hammered steel.

I already have parts on order for the next hack. Very similar. I now intend to push the envelope a little more, by stuffing a PC into a Macintosh SE (Same basic style, only smaller.)

I still need to order annother one of those Power supplies. I am going to try, however, to use a full size hard drive this time. (Upping the ante even more.)

Don't expect anything on this for at least a month.

Genius, and madness can be quite similar, you know.

It's a 10" trinitron with 8.4 viewable. Half of the machine is monitor. The hard part about swapping crt's is that the knobs had only enouh slack in the wires to get them to where the mnufacturer put them in the monitor. I had to extend every stinking wire.. It was not fun soldering and heat-shrinking all those connections.

Good Lord, man! 'Tis an abomination in the eyes of God and man! A PC inside the skin of an Apple?! Unclean Heathen! Go! Wash! And beg for the Lord's Mercy upon your soul!

Actually that is a pretty sweet mod. That must be fun for you to show off.

People once called me everything under the sun for wanting to stuff a watercooled PC in to a G4 chassis . . . . . Unfortunetly I could never find a chassis with the right price tag . . . . . Would have been a sweet looking machine . . . . .

I am now designing Version 3.0

This next pile of money will correct some of the faults of it predecessors. All cablin will be inside.

No ugly knobs. It will use the stock tube, and analog board (Voltage on the horizontal sync will be increased to 67volts from 60volts to allow it o display 640x480)

No dead-giveaway paint job. This puppy is gonna look just like a mac classic.

No obvious CD mod. The cd will be a slim slot load mounted toaster style. and there will be an LS-120 in the floppy position.

Keyboard choppin. I am going to transplant the guts of a ps2 keyboard into a mac keyboard shell. I will find a way to use the power button on the mac keyboard.

And finally, this time it is going to be fast (AMD processor). (Micro ATX turned sideways will fit.

This is the plan... more to come in the following weeks.

Have you seen these yet Az?

http://www.shuttleonline.com/spec.php3?model=mk20

They go for dirt according to pricewatch. With the addition of some dipswitch banks soldered to the VID and FID pins you should have a nice compact and overclockable machine.

Personally, I'd throw a Duron 1GHz in the system. They don't consume as much power as other AMD CPUs and they are good for an easy 20% overclock.

And I'd hunt down a 1U copper heatsink to put on it.

Just throwin' some ideas at ya, though I'm sure you have plenty of your own too.
