Is it quieter? The 36GB Raptor classic is in the garage server these days for its noise polution. Worth their weight in decibels those things :\

Its pretty small as far as diesel generators go. Just remember to fill her up before the lan party.

Loud isnt the issue to be honest. I can handle the sound of a car engine, despite it being loud. And I can handle my air conditioner despite it being loud. This is the most annoying pitch that just keeps you awake and makes the blood vessels in your forehead throb. Then when it works, it makes this scratching noise, like a rat ripping up carpet. Its hard to explain until you have spend the night in the same room as one. The 74s are somewhat more refined, but still loud and annoying. Its like 30% better. But to put that in comparison, its like saying Robert Mugabe is 30% less evil than Fidel Castro. The 36s are too small to be even remotely practical, closer in speed to a high quality 7200RPM drive in speed than to the 74GB Raptors, and can bring the most sane of people to take a cordless drill to their skulls given a long enough time frame. I know the 74s are a bit better, and I have not personally had a 74 or 150, but this 36 really is that bad, and worse.

The new Raptor looks to be fantastically fast for single user work, pushing its way up to and beyond some 15KRPM SCSI drives. Put against similar cost SCSI drives for a multi-user environment, and it fares badly. So, the good news is that for the average user the new Raptor offers more storage, more I/O operations a second, and about the same noise. The bad news appears to be that the new Raptor, like the old Raptors, cannot hold its own against SCSI drives in a multi-user server environment. It also suffers a higher power consumption. If you have the money and don't mind the noise, the new Raptor looks to be a fantastically fast drive for the desktop. If you have a server, continue investing in those SCSI drives.

all WD drives are that way. some don't have the noise management turned on either ![]() Don't forget that DSIO overstates everything lol.

You're not kidding, are you? almost every WD drive has freatures AAM for a long time, as have other maufacturer's. Basically it just slows down the spin speed as well as a few other things, to keep the noise down. Now, if you were an ATI user, you would have seen this functionality appear in ATITool in more than one version.
