overclocking amd k6-2 533mhz

I have a shuttle hot591p motherboard with a via mvp3 chipset and a k6-2 533mhz processor.

what is the maximum speed I could overclock to without buying any hardware( I currently have a fan a heatsink)?

I heard that the way to do it is to change the voltage, is that true?

There is no definate maximum for an overclock, it varies from CPU to CPU.

I have found a page that gives you details of voltage and FSB adjustments to your motherboard. You will need to see what FSB you are at at the moment, if its 100mhz, you wont be going any higher, since that appears to be the maximum for your board, if you are running 66, change the relevant jumpers for the smallest FSB increase possible (75mhz). this will also boost the CPU speed. I would keep the voltage on the "auto" setting, probably safer that way. Be warned, there is a risk when overclocking, you can destroy your hardware.

Here is the link: Jumper Settings

Welcome to the forums by the way! If before you try to overclock your system you want any more info let us know!

Go get you a socket A heavy duty cpu cooler. It will fit right on there and give you enough cooling. Make sure to use the thermal grease that comes with cpu cooler. Also get you a burn in tester program(cpu stability tester). Each time you change something run the program. If cpu locks it's unstable. If it don't go up another notch and try again. The program is in the aoa files on this web site. Not quite sure which one best. Maybe someone post here and tell you.

Yes they sure do thats why I recommended the socket a cooler. The original one is not heavy duty enough for overclocking.

To get 50Mhz for free, the adventurous will "decap" a K6-2, this means taking the heatspreader off it, exposing the core as on Athlons. The way to do this is to work a razor blade under all four corners of the spreader, about 1/4 of an inch or 5mm inward, then to twist with a screwdriver to pop it off. The core is fragile as on Athlons, be very careful not to crack it while mounting the heatsink.

Voltage will get you something too, you don't really want to go above 2.5V on a regular heatsink though, if you're brave you can go to 2.7 on a big sink, but mostly around there and above, people will be using peltiers or refrigerated water cooling.

If you would like to know more about decapping, I will go find an article abotu it for you that explains it better, I think it might be at lostcircuits.com have to go dig out some old bookmarks though.

MVP3 boards usually had a max bus speed of 100Mhz and your max multi is 6, so 600 maybe the most you'll get out of that combo. If you have up to 112 on it, you may be able to push it a little over 600 on air, but beyond that is unlikely without something more exotic.

regards,

Road Warrior
