Turns out that de-clawing a cat not only destroys the cat's psychological well being, it also makes them walk incorrectly for the rest of their lives. Let's hear it for the well being of furniture everywhere!

Furnishing the mind is more important than furnishing the house, imho.

Had a gf once that was into horses (owned a couple). Her housing situation went sour and so she moved in with me. She was insistent on bringing a kitten with her that was used to ranging outside. I said no because it would likely destroy my speaker grills (I put a lot of stock in my audio gear). She said no, it wouldn't, and so I did the usual thing -- gave in.

Some three or four weeks later I got home to find my speaker grills shredded. Don't talk to me about cats and front claws. They need them if they live outside, but inside? Unless it's a shed or barn, forget it!

I probably have a "sheltered" life by most standards, but when it comes to gfs, my experience is there's a fundamental high want (in absence of a child) a kitten (given apartment constraints, frequently a rabbit), but otherwise a baby girl. I've no problem with this, for God's sake, why shouldn't they want a child, a girl -- God bless their dear hearts! It's just the fully clawed inside-living kitten I've a problem with.

PS. I really preferred being classified "Gecko" over "Salamander". The higher level makes me feel more an institutional attribute than an individual. A personal conceit? Perhaps so, and perhaps nothing more than a nonsensical expression. Perhaps what matters is that regardless of how long we've been knocking around and whatever we have or have not accomplished, there remains the possibility of contributing meaningfully to the whole. On that basis, I guess I've little option but to accept "Salamander". At any rate, my salutations to others !

Everyone decides what if any pets they want. Other people's furniture and audio gear are not my business. After you become a musician you no longer have expensive audio gear, the money goes into music making equipment instead, which by a happy accident sport steel speaker covers, with small holes of course.

My last cat destroyed an expensive custom made couch. I was too lazy to train her to not do so, so I eventually resigned myself to the fact that the couch was slowly being sent to couch heaven. The little snookums shredded that piece of furniture from stem to stern. Now all of my furniture is made of marble, as a thoughtful cat owner's should be. It's amazingly comfortable, and no worries!

Taking you at face value George, your input is far more than any kitten should seriously hope for, and marble is surely not what my butt would yearn for !

I think I get what you're saying where music creators have different needs from music "appreciators". My experience is that a true musician can hear the original music regardless of the playback system. It's only the music "appreciator" that requires the playback setup be top rate. I don't feel this provides an out for the offending kitten, but it surely deserves consideration for those that "enjoy" music ! I have only respect for the music creators!

I find (I know, I said I wouldn't) that if you just totally ignore their "I'm just to stupid to do anything but follow my whim" attitude and scare the living hell out of them the first ten or twenty times they do something anti social...they will stop, don't worry! They are easy to revive and they don't do whatever you "asked them not to" anymore.

If a cat can be taught to use the toilet and they can, they can be taught what not to scratch...Oh! It really helps if you get them a good scratching post or three!

They seem to respond well to a good compromise....and a lot of screaming and yelling and bluff charging... I've had many a cat that rather quickly realized that My birds and my Kef speaker covers are completely off limits to them...

as in I"ll boot your silly ass off the planet off limits...I should possibility add I never actually do more than shake them a bit, enough to make them uncertain of what I'll do next....
if they think your crazy...they will follow your rules.":O}

The cool kiss of marble on a frosty winter day is to be missed by any sane human posterior.

In the winter only standing is permitted in the cloasters household. The cat is free to sleep on the marble couch if she wishes!

In summer I tend to live downstairs, in winter upstairs, a simple principle -- heat rises !

Indeed it does, having a multi storey abode would be great for heat management, but that's more difficult to come by in apartment land. My current feline has one inch long fur, which makes sleeping on the hypothetical marble furniture hypothetically possible.

I dunno if all cats shed all the time, but it's more noticeable with long fur. Yep, it gets everywhere. C'est la vie.

George, you and you're perhaps hypothetical cat (and clearly hypothetical marble couch) are totally great, but I'm forced to admit that in winter, I really hate it that all my downstairs generated heat wafts upstairs while I'm trying to be at least semi-comfortable downstairs! I really hate winter !

The older I get, the more I appreciate heat. Winters last for a looong time at this latitude. Ugh!
