Thanks for the offer mate !

I do like the badges, but I'm just light on enthusiasm these days. I started a fresh AMD gamer build and have all the parts, but then stopped. Got Mint 14.1 running dual boot on an old Intel system, but am little fooling with it. On another front, of two vehicles (one on stands) one's 5-1/2 yr old remote security controller is dead (very fond of that upgrade) and the other's 5 yr old aftermarket head unit quit (also very fond of).

Further, the weather's turning cold and the political scene is pretty much a disaster. (Is it really so much to ask that Congress pay its bills and keep the gov't running? Private individuals can be prosecuted for extortion, why not members of Congress? When Congressional inaction causes workers to be furloughed, why is it Congress continues to be paid?) 'Fraid I'm just in a funk, what can I say !

Thank God for the internet and good books.

Fifteen days of gov't shutdown later, I presume you guys are aware U.S. is again on negative debt watch -- Fitch rating could drop from AAA to AA as soon as Wednesday! (Remember 2011 when S&P dropped U.S. debt rating from AAA to AA+ ? Well, here we go again!)

Finally, at virtually the 11th hour Wednesday 16th, a Senate brokered bill to re-open gov't and pay the U.S. debt passed. Vote was Senate 18 Repubs against and House 144 Repubs against! If left to the House Repubs (as the Speaker had been insisting), we'd still be there and Fitch would definitely have downgraded US debt (perhaps they still will)!

Unfortunately, the deadlines will now come up again Jan 15 (CR) and Feb 7 (debt limit) with the New Year. Will it be a rerun?

How nice, what House Repubs consider a "short term inconvenience" (a $24B loss to the economy and a .6% loss in annualized GDP) has been officially condemned by China and the U.K.! The Mad Hatter must be enjoying the power of a Tea Party (is Cruz the personification?) Note that neither Cantor nor Ryan voted for the bill!

Is it at all within the realm of possibility that the powerful will pay for their crimes against the rest of humanity?

In terms of the U.S., it depends on the vote of the Republican electorate. How such a large number of people can deliberately and consistently vote against their own personal interests is remarkable! Explanation has to come down to the arrival of civil rights enactments that prompted large numbers in certain states (particularly in the South) to switch from Democrat to Republican. Not so much a concern for personal rights, but rather stamping on the rights of others, a question of asserting self supremacy? As witnessed in the anti-shutdown rally for the WWII memorial a week ago, the Stars and Bars can still fly proudly for those with the appropriate inclinations.

If the right, as in wrong, buttons are pushed people can vote against their best interests by the millions. Thank goodness that critical thinking is on the curriculum of all our public schools.

"80,000" dead cattle from a surprise freeze in South Dakota. And it didn't make the news?

Thank goodness they divorced Food Stamps from the Farm Bill. It's important that well off farming corp's get welfare and that the wretched of the earth starve. Republican Jesus wants it that way.

Yeah, it's garbage, but never forget Democrats can be idiots too, it's just that Repubs seem to be able to concentrate their stupidity in a way that's perhaps remarkable. Bottom line is to evaluate what you yourself want to see for yourself, your sons, your daughters, and those that come after. If you aren't willing to make a stand, who is it that you are expecting to stand in for you?

Very good point! Perhaps the answer is to emigrate? Very hard to do.

Given the U.S. has one of the better forms of gov't, getting out of Dodge probably won't help much, likely trading problems more than correcting them. Repubs are already stomping on the idea that a comprehensive immigration act can happen this year. They're also talking about a next round of manipulations leveraging the Jan/Feb CR and Debt Limit votes. I just don't understand why those guys get paid anything at all, they do nothing useful.

For many years there was no debt limit vote requirement since the 1979 "Gephardt Rule" rendered it unnecessary. It was Repub Speaker Newt Gingrich in 1995 that set aside the rule in order to fight Clinton.

The resulting shutdown did real damage to the Republican Party, though perhaps not as much as this last one appears to have done.
