P4 Prescotts look good. But they are mighty hot..

The P4 Prescott's 1 Mb L2 cache is hard to resist. But I read that Intel's supplied HSF is not adequate. Can anyone recommend an excellent(as in easy to install, moves lots of air and is quiet) aftermarket HSF, please?

My Thermalright 948U keeps it around 46C with 1.7V running through a Northwood. When I drop it to 1.55V, it runs at around 40C and 3.166Ghz. For a socket 478 Prescott, I would get a Thermalright SP-94. For a LGA775, I would get a Thermaltake CL-P0024. The Thermaltake is actually a heatpipe setup and it might be a little more difficult to install.

BTW, if you get the Thermalright, get a 90mm fan for it. You're ears will thank you.

I have the Thermalright 94 and I originally had the Panaflo 92 on it...it IDLED at 5100 RPM.....eesh!! So I put an Avantec Blue case fan with thermal-regulation on it and it runs at 47C at about 2000 RPM....less noise but same efficiency at cooling!

I have the 2.8 Prescott and it's nice and chilly!

Whatever,

What board and cpu? Is it a Prescott or Northwood core? Also, are you running a chiller? (re: "using phase change (-27~ -30C liquid)".

What coolant are you using? I'd love to know, because finding the right coolant for my own chiller setup is causing me some real headaches!

BTW, good morning to you as well.

Hmmmm...........that mix won't work for me, unfortunately. The ethylene-glycol can't handle the power densities at the core in my direct-die water cooling system, and ends up burning onto the chip, thus RAISING my temps.

I've got a new all copper design that I haven't had a chance to play with though. Hopefully that will solve the problem of Alcohol destroying my Plexiglass-based block.
