Question Asus P2B-VM with Slot 1 Pentium 2

I have an asus p2b-vm mobo with 292 Megs RAM, onboard video, audio, and various other features. I am trying to load Win2K onto the hdd (it works @ 400Mhz(5x @100Mhz FSB)), but when I oc'd the chip to 533Mhz(that's 5x @133Mhz FSB, at least on this board), it hangs with a BSOD that says my board's not fully ACPI-compliant. I've flashed the BIOS to the latest version on the asus site, that being 1013.003. It runs up until the Win2K splash screen with the progress bar along the bottom(color, not B&W one), then hangs.

Anyone have any ideas why this keeps happening? I have a smallish hsf on the chip(1 fan), just recently took it apart and cleaned and re-applied thermal compound (it did this before, too). I was looking for some way to directly attach a heatsink to the chip, but apparently it's almost impossible. I'm looking at getting a slightly taller heatsink with dual fans. I'm not sure that would help, though. I have adequate airflow through the case(three 80mm fans in, including psu fan, one server fan out), and the heatsink gets warm enough to indicate it's actually drawing out heat.

Thanks for any help on this matter

Do you have the ability to set a different multi or an FSB between 100 and 133 MHz? That PII may simply not be able to run 133.

I presume thats a deschutes core PII?

It's quite likely that it just can't handle 533mhz, from memory I think around the 500 mark was tops for those chips, with only later ppga mendocino celerons pushing 550-600mhz, either that or your AGP card/onboard video isn't liking the 89mhz AGP bus you have to have with the 440BX chipset running at 133mhz

The chip is 400Mhz. The FSB(PCI) goes like this: 66.8(33.4), 75(37.5), 83(41.5), 100.3(33.4), 103(34.3), 105(35), 110(36.7), 112(37.3), 115(38.3), 120(40), 124(41.3), 124(31), 133(44.3), 133(33.3). My multipliers go up .5 from x2-x5.

Here's the specs from Intel on my chip.
sSpec Number SL2U6
Processor Frequency 400.00 MHz
CPUID String 0652
Package Type S.E.C.C.
Core Voltage 2.0V
Bus Speed 100 MHz
Thermal Guideline 24.3W
Core Stepping dB0
Thermal Spec 75°C
L2 Cache Size 512 KB
Manufacturing Technology 0.25 micron
L2 Cache Speed 200 MHz
Bus/Core Ratio 4.0

Funny thing with this one is it'll boot fine, and the BIOS reads 533Mhz, she runs fast enough for that speed, but it doesn't seem stable enough to finish loading Win2K. It's sounding more and more that if I want more speed out of this board, I'll have to get a celery for it.

Again, thanks for the help.

It's difficult to say if it's the cpu or video thats the problem, even though BX chipsets had a 1/4 PCI divider, they only had a 2/3 AGP

You can probably stick a tualatin in it if you don't mind modding a slotket

Thumbs up

I'm brave, but not that brave...yet.
That's a little bit more than I want to do to my mobo just yet.
Although, it does get things going in my mind.
Thanks for the heads up about Lunchbox.
