| Overclocking a 3.4 Hey. I was wondering how you overclock a CPU that has an operating frequency of 3.4? I've never overclocked before, but I would like to see if i can try and get that processor speed a little higher, such as like 4.2 or something. And if i do overclock it, do i need more fans, and if i overclock it, will it burn up the CPU? i need these questions answered as fast as possible. thanks

| Don't rush into it you are far better off doing alot of research and taking it slowly or you could find yourself buying another CPU very soon.

| um.. i acually havent bought my comp parts yet. i was just thinking ahead, and for gaming, and other things it proly woulndt hurt to have a higher CPU speed than 3.4. My motherboard that im considering heavily is this link right here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138260

| So? Biostar, Abit, Asus, EPOX, no matter they all Overclock in the bios ,you enter the bios the same way. you use arrow keys and enter keys only til you are ready to leave then you use F10 and hit enter .These are all common things. No matter, what brand or Platform. If you do not know this then you too must read!!! I know he or she needs to read and read and read. How do I know this. If they had read and read and re-read then they would have never asked about a biostar!!! they would have seen my thread with the Epox 5PDAJ or they would have read about Abit or Asus Boards. and they would know from reading that MSI has made very good boards for the AMD platform but although they appear promising their Intel boards have been rather bland at best. so you see that Oc'ing info is great info know matter what Processor and board he gets. My thread will show him a board that will devestate most others for $75. Now I don't know about you but I think this is a regular gold mine of information. all he or she has to do is just read and that other than the time spent is completely free!! WZ |

| That is all good to say but if you had the Abit NF7-S v2 and then when to the NF7-S2G you would be in for a big shock because the second board can bearly overclock anything I know from use. Now I've never had Intel, but from that I learned boards aren't boards some are much better than others.

| Well first off, he/she needs to determine the CPU to purchase. Since AMD doesnt make anything above 2.8ghz, im assuming that means Intel. Unless they mean a 3.4ghz equivalent. So if your looking for gaming, go AMD. If your going to overclock, try Asus, DFI, or Epox (provided were talking socket 939) as Abit is far overpriced now a days.

| the best mobo would be an Epox or a DFI if your not sure you can always use Ntune. Plus depite my AMD being bettr for gaming I prefer my intel since I can do more then one thing at once. AMD lags alot while doing to aplications. and if you do use intel go with MSI.

| While Biostar isn't exactly a gold medal winner for overclocking, ie extreme... I've had a few of them w/i the last couple of years, and have found them to be decent overclocking budget boards... That said, it comes down to specific models. Many Biostar boards don't overclock at all. Next, for overclocks... just about all modern (single core) P4's will top out before 4ghz on good air. There is not a big difference between 2.8 and 3.6. The 2.8 may top out at 3.7 and the 3.6 may top out at 3.8. The higher the stock speed the less the additional overclock. This is general only and is conditional on 963 factors, starting with core (prescott/NW, single HT, nonHT, dualcore), temps, voltage, core revision) and all the outside factors, cooling, mobo, mem, PSU...etc...etc. Personally, WZ has the best advice... READ, READ, READ
