Well, the stock temps seem very reasonable, but I'm surprised at how much the temps increased with overclocking. I was under the impression that C2Ds stayed nice and cool, even under strain...?

I made my decision. I'll send board cpu and ram back.
my final oc after a few days:

450MHz FSB
DDR2 900 CL4-4-4-12 (not bad for some GEIL 667 CL3)
3,6GHz CPU @75degrees

~0.3V more vcore. 65nm -> small die

ouch 73c if being read correctly will kill your cpu quickly. Intel's recomended max cpu temperature for sustained reliability is a smidgen over 60c.

Thats also hot for 1.58v!

I run my c2d at 1.625v and run dual prime stable at 3.73GHz which is 58c under prime, hovers around 50c dual folding.

The chips run cold up until the point you have to start cranking up the vcore. since heat output is related to the square of voltage and clockspeed. It can increase quite alot.

I am running over 1GHz above stock (40%) and 0.325v over voltage. (25%)

That would make it 40% more heat from clockspeed alone and 50% more heat from the extra voltage! that soon makes the little 65w cpu run a little warm at 136.5w (Thats warmer than the top of the line presler's ran at!) and is more than double the original design power.

I think I know what was wrong. I used the last drop of AS5 I was able to squeeze out. maybe a component was missing, so the thermal paste didn't work correctly.

Conroe will work with some nvidia boards its just not as optimised as those using intel chipsets. There is a new nforce coming out which is specifically designed to handle the conroe but i think ati's RD600 was going to come out first, however with amd's buying of ati it might be a while
