Processor, memory may marry in future computers

On Tuesday, Intel showed off an 80-core processor at its developer forum taking place in San Francisco this week and one of the prominent features of the chip is that each core is connected directly to a 256MB memory chip through a technology called Through Silicon Vias, or TSV.

Vias through silicon, wow! Who'd a thunk it? Vias through m'board layers impress the heck out of me. And get this: our very own surlyjoe saws sections of mainboards off if they're too big to fit into one of his scratchbuilt cases!

Yeah, embedded ram has been around for years, even embedded DRAM. Up to now, though, it's only been used in purpose-built, cost-sensitive applications as far as I know.

It's a crap name for a proprietary interconnect between cpu and buffer.
