It'll be out just about the same time as Barcelona, which we already knew.

AMD claims Barcelona will deliver 40% better performance that Intel's Cloverton. Of course, the question is, what does 'better performance' mean? In any case, assuming that AMD's optimistic projections are accurate, Penryn ought to be just about the same performance.

Gonna be interesting this year.

It would appear that the rumours of working penryn core able to boot into windows is true and infact much better than that.

They have now been showing a few systems off using first run silion.

What is most impressive here is that they have the 45nm technology running in a mobile form factor; heat and power must not be a big issue (even in terms of power stability). The frequency was not shown however in this case.

And maybe most impressive of all, the dual procoessor, quad-core (total of 8 cores!) system running at 2.13 GHz and encoding video in Adoboe Premiere showed off the power these processors provide even this early in the year!

These demos showcase some of the benefits that moving to 45nm will provied to Intel's Penryn family of processors near the end of this year.



Intel's ability to get a first or second generation silicon of 45nm running at 2.13 GHz is more than impressive and getting stability high enough to run something as processing intense as HD video playback adds to it.

One upping even the dual-core setup above, the 45nm quad-core configuraiton (still two dual-cores I assume) running at 1.86 GHz and playing the very CPU intense Rainbox Six: Vegas title was on display.

This dual processor configuration in a workstation configuration again showed the stability of the Intel's latest designs.

Unless I am mistaken, they are claiming to have prototype silicon at 32nm now.

32nM is scheduled for 2009 for mass production, intel like to do things in two year batches with sram / early chips being produced during the even numbered years and mass production the following year.
All the current hype about using high-k dielectrics and metal is for the 45nM process which they have two of there biggest plants set to ramp up production in the second half of this year (they're already turning out chips) with the new fab28 to follow this time next year

Having first silicon doing 2GHz+ is very impressive, it took several spins of conroe to hit 2GHz.

Penryn is only really a die shrink like presler was to smithfield. Its second generation 45nm chips that amd will have to worry about again.
