Intel pulls 45 nanometre chips into 1H 07 - So says the rumour mill

The inquirer has an interesting article http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=37562
on the possibility of intel pulling its 45nm process and the penryn core into the first half of 07, this is shortly after the rumour mill suggested it had moved from 2H'07 to 1Q'08.

If they do manage to get the chips out by the end of the first half of this year (june '07) or even shortly after this will be around the time of amd's barcelona core.

It could give intel the clockspeed advantage they need to stay ahead in the processor wars. If first spin silicon has been hitting ~2.13GHz+ for quad core the next few steppings should be around the 2.5GHz mark if not more.

With amd only predicting to hit 2.3GHz on release and 2.6GHz a year after they're going to be in trouble.

As i'm sure the intel hype wagon is going to get rolling soon and get people salivating over the 45nm chips

Sounds good for the customers. But I hope that AMD stays in contention - competition can only be good for us

Given the claims Intel had been making regarding Penryn, I would have been very, VERY surprised if they hadn't pulled the release in to somewhere around Barcelona time-frame. If Barcelona is as good as AMD say it is, then Intel don't DARE give them breathing room.

They always leapfrog each other. Amd releases new core thats faster than present intel, intel responds with improved core, amd beats it for value, prices for both level out, amd releases new core rinse and repeat.

Here's some more info on the 45nm Penryn:

http://www.intel.com/technology/sili...technology.htm

The chip is already running multiple operating systems. I'd say this chips production process is very near its completion. It would seem they are going to make their original release date.
