Question Cloasters !!!

Cloasters,

got a pc over here I need u 2 scream at -- check this out:

Dell 8400; Intel 82801FR / 925X/XE.

Owner changed OS to Xp Pro, when it errantly shipped with Xp Home.

So he talks the office girl down the street into performing a repair install of the OS, to make the changeover... but...

she freaks on the install, when it doesn't boot to Windows.

Somehow or another Dell support gets involved, and manages to walk them through a change of bios drive controller strategy (I'm thinking)...

and the reason I'm saying that is because, in bios, the drive is setup on UltraATA logic instead of SATA RAID or AHCI; and in Windows no SCSI or IDE 82801FR SATA RAID or SATA AHCI devices are registering in Device Manager.

following me? right -- she forgot to load the F6 driver (because she didn't know about it, I'm assuming)... and it's running in Windows in UDMA5.

So here's the question:

If I start up the add new hardware wizard in Windows, and manually add a new SCSI / RAID Controller... then point to the extracted F6 drivers, and reboot...

will I be able to change the bios config of the sata drives (only one, attached to SATA0), by changing the config in bios to AHCI... and make it all work?

Before you ask why would I want to, it kinda wrecks the imagination that an ST3160023AS drive is setup to read/write no better or worse than 44500 in ATTO, just because of how it was improperly installed, don't ya think?

Whadaya think / know?

EDIT: junk it -- according to readme, no other way than F6 on preinstall; ie
"1. If you are installing the operating system on a system
configured for RAID or AHCI mode, you must pre-install
the Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager driver using the
F6 installation method described in section 5.3."

Freakin SOL again... but I already hurted 2 damn much about it.
Guess I'll have 2 redo his repair by resetting bios, then boot to cd and F6 it.

How did your solution work? Kinda cheesy to assume that ATA would be used automatically.

weird as it sounds, this board's bios defaults the hdd "mode" to AHCI, but someone overrode it ~ {when I went into the bios setup, I found the mode set to UATA}.

that's when I started to recall a conversation from the owner of this pc, from a year or so ago, about what a hell day they had with Dell trying to get the thing to boot to windows after the os upgrade.

I kinda pieced the rest together for myself, at that point.

Excellent, glad that you cogitated on it and slayed the Dell dragon!
