Help me impress my boss (board&CPU)

My boss gave me his gaming machine to rid its of spyware. I recommended he upgrade. He has an NF7, XP2200, and an FX5900.

Please tell me what the hot price/performance CPU and motherboard is right now? I know that Intel is in the lead right now, so a C2D seems like the way to go.

I would suggest something along the lines of an e6400 Conroe and a X1900 series ATI chip. That seems to be the sweet spot of the market right now.

Ok, $218.00 at the Egg. But no Epox Intel boards at the Egg. Anyone have a specific make/model on the motherboard that they would recommend?

The Asus P5B-deluxe The Asus P5W DH (My Board) The Intel Bad Axe 2
Remember this will require and New 500 watt minumum power supply,
DDR2 memory.( Right Now Newegg has G.Skill 6400HZ on sale for $ 169!!!!!) Buy now guys!! a PCI-E vid card. There will be a lot of upgrading to do but....Oh my it is worth it!! A good Cooler is a necessity!! Tuniq towers are popular as well as Zalman 9700 coolers
You are just going to have to do some reading.
Let us know what you end up with..

I spotted this, http://tools.corsairmemory.com/syste...id=78237&sid=1 . Looks like a good recommendation for that board.
CPU http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819115004
Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131142

Hard drive, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136033

Memory, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145015

Video card, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102067

And a Fortron AX500. I'm still open to suggestions.

Well.... from what I see, you are going all out on this system(what is the price limit you work'n with here?), CMIIR but the mobo and the gfx card are miss matched and won't work together without hacked drivers(nvidia made "sli" ati made "Crossfire").... other than that, looks like a kick ass comp! I would go for a crossfire edition gfx card also, 2 is always better than one!!

That's why I posted this thread. Good catch. I'd never given much thought to the SLI/Crossfire question. Just running a single card, I don't think it would be an issue. But to leave him the option of adding a second card, I guess I'll need to switch to an Nvidia card.

This isn't an all out machine, I'd be going with a better (more expensive) video card and memory for that. But my boss is fairly wealthy man, so no need to lowball it either. My machine (S939 4600 dual core, 6800 GS) badly out performs his present machine. This one will leave mine in the dust.

Just a quick note on the HDD. The Raptors are great. I am still running one. With the SATA2 interface on that board. you will hardly notice the performance of a straight up SATA2 drive at 7200 RPM. You will however net some more storage. For 150 bucks you could get 2 SATA2 drives and run raid 0 and end up with 400 GB of space and some better performance than that Raptor.

Not quite so - a single ATI card will work fine on an SLI motherboard and a single nVidia card will work fine in a CrossFire motherboard. But it is true you cannot run CrossFire on an SLI board nor SLI on a CrossFire board.

Either way SLI and CrossFire are only really useful in über high end builds, usually it is cheaper to get one fast card than two slower ones.

Then you have the option to add one down the line...if that seems worthwhile when you get there. I'm running a 7950 Gt on my P5W Deluxe, never had a machine that satisfies as this one does.

I'd consider the 6600 if you have the cash available. an easy 3.6 gigs and a possible 3.8 with some luck, good Ram, Bios upgrades and experience with the board.

I think you will have a hard time finding fault with the duel cores":O}
