i adopted

a 700mhz p3 with 128sdram. my boss gave it to me for free. now what to use it for? any one got some old sdram i could take off their hands? i've been cleaning it up for about a day and trying it to run as smooth as i can, but man is it slow. i'm thinking about putting linux on it or reinstalling xp on it if i get some more ram. and suggestions. i got all the info on the board and want to see if i could buy a better cpu for it. i would probably have to update bios and whatnot.

Did P3's actually have that slow of a clockspeed? If so, it's almost unbelievabobble. Lemme see if I have any SDRAM hiding in the drawer.

I had a look down memory lane. Two PC-2100 256 Mb DIMMs. Those are mighty useful nowadays. Two Durons, an 850, and a coveted 900! A GF2 with 2, count 'em, 2 pipes. Sorry, bonesaw. Hopefully another Member can be of service.

I have a 700MHz with 348MB SDRAM, have it running ubuntu 6.06, and use it as a media player. It plays divx fine, but wont play DVD's without jerky playback.

It has the original Intel 810 graphics, and puts out a decent pic (1024x768) onto my 29 inch TV, via a VGA to S-Video converter.

I had a PIII 700 back in the day. It was a pretty nice rig. I will dig around to see if I have another 128 sdram at least.

Even a very modest PCI graphics card would allow that computer to play back DVDs smoothly. I'm talking as low as an old Radeon with 8 megs of memory.

If this unit is Socket 370, you can probably go as high as a 1,000 MHz P3, or an 1,100 Celeron. A Lin Lin Tualatin adapter caould allow you to go significantly higher using a Tualatin P3, or a Tualatin based Celeron. If Slot 1, the same applies, just using differing slot adapters.

its a compaq motherboard. i just updated the bios from the year 2000 to the current ones that came out in 2001. could i or should i upgrade the cpu because you can find used celerons at 1.0-1.4ish for next to nothing. and if any one has some old pc100 ram laying around sell it to me.
