Advice on a new computer please :)

It's finally come down to it, I need a new computer. My faithful Athlon 64 3000+ has given up and died. So, here is the new spec I think I want. Please advise as to whether I should get anything different or as well or anything really I've got it pretty close to my budget as it stands, so increases in price would have to be offset.

Coolermaster RC-330 V2 Elite case

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 SLACR 2.40GHz

Abit IX38 Quad-GT motherboard

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 pro (for now - planning something heftier after recoup the costs of the machine)

768Mb ScanFX 8800GTX

2x1Gb Corsair TwinX DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-8500 CAS5

Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme OEM PCI-E

24" Dell E248WFP LCD

720W Enermax Infinity EIN720AWT PSU

I was also going to grab a copy of Vista Ultimate - should I go 32 or 64 bit?

Thanks for any help/advice,

Tevildo

forgot to add the dvd-rw drive - Pioneer DVR-212BK SATA thingy

Some folks like Vista. But more aver that you could save a goodly pile of money by skipping it. Nice machine, btw!

I see nothing missing short of a good water cooling system. You would be amazed what a cool system will give back to you.

Sounds like an awesome system spec. to me! (and not just because it is pretty similar to mine! )

Personally I find the Realtek HD integrated sound card to be much better than the AC'97 it replaces, and I wonder how much gain you would get from a X-Fi, in terms of sound quality. Perhaps someone else knows more?

Would be nice if I could avoid the x-fi, the savings will allow me to celebrate the purchase in style (by buying a shiny new game to show it off :)

If you are going to be running Nvidia for the video card and have no plans of running Crossfire in the future a P35 based board will do just as well as an X38 in performance and overclock.

Well, I've ordered it. I went with the X38 as there is a reasonable chance I will go crossfire when I upgrade, especially since I have the mboard for it :) The 8800 will seem old soon enough, I'm sure :S

Alas there has already been delay. Memory out of stock (it wasn't when I ordered it!). Scan did their usual thing of letting me know this today, when it was due to be delivered, not yesterday when they failed to be able to pick/send it. To get the rest of the order here asap, I've changed to <shudder> 1Gb of PC4200. I'll at least be able to watch videos on the shiny monitor. And it has been picked now, so _should_ be sent out today :S

Anybody know any other places to buy computer parts from? I'm kinda going off scan, this is the second time they've done something like this to me in the last few months. Last time they didn't even tell me _what_ was out of stock.

Thanks y'all,

Tevildo

Don't bother with the GTX, save yourself some money and get a 8800GT or the new 8800GTS. You'll clock it up to GTX performance.

alas I did not get that message till today (stupid lack of internet at home), and the PC was delivered on Monday. The GTX is very shiny though. Took some maneuvering to get in the case :P Now I just have to wait for my new RAM to arrive (should be today, assuming my housemate is in long enough to sign for it) and then I can get it up and running and benchmarked. Should do a little better than my current rig :P (which has changed slightly from my sig - the 9800pro is now an MX4000... and the 9800pro is all black and toasty).

"Black and toasty," that's not even good with toast!
