Question E8400 or Q6600 rev0

Hey guys,

I have a question. One of my friends wants to trade his Q6600 for my E8400. His Q6600 is running at 3,6 Ghz with no problems. My E8400 is running at 4 Ghz with no problems. What should I do?

Chris

This really is a simple decision.
How often does he actually use all 4 cores?
Like encoding a movie while playing a game, or encoding two movies at the same time.
If all he does is single tasks on the computer at a time that only require 2 worker threads then the E8400 would be the better choice IMO.

Quads are nice, they take a little getting used to and a little different setup. Most of my encoding work is done in Linux so I get more of what the quad has to offer. Under XP there is only a slight gain in performance but I can do more things at the same time.

I had two quads going for awhile, but soon realized my home server didn't justify it, so I threw a dually back in it.

For the most part the quad at 3.6 would do just as well as the 4.0 E8400 (outside of a few benchmarks), folding would pick up about 1K per day if it's of interest to you.

The only thing I have heard that if you game a lot, the higher clock of the 8400 will net better results. But this is only for those that run the 8400 at 4.5 or so.

If you can get that Quad to 3.5 or so, you should really like it.
