Intel launches new Tolapai system-on-a-chip design

By Joel Hruska | Published: July 23, 2008 - 11:01PM CT

Intel launched its new embedded x86 system-on-a-chip (SoC) today, and in doing so, moved a small step closer toward eventually competing head-to-head with ARM. Formally, the new SoC platform is known as the Intel EP80579 Integrated Processor Family, ... [Frontpage...]

Imagine putting a memory controller and a bunch of peripherals (SATA/USB/Ethernet/etc) on the same chip as the processor. That's all an SoC really is.

This appears to be the first of a (new) line of SoC's from Intel, perhaps designed to take on ARM. Intel has a lot of catching up to do in the SoC market, given that 2 billion ARM based chips were shipped in 2007. ARM point out that in 2007, they were at the heart of a quarter of all electronic devices sold worldwide.
