| just as a heads up, i have been at 4.0 for some time now, and no problems. i leave my comp on 24-7 and never have had a problem.

| OK, great. Now, since you run 24/7, we need you to get that box running the Folding@Home client. It's for a good cause-what do you think? A little quid pro quo for helping you to get to that 4G

My rig has come together and it's very close to yours. Like you, I just did the easy clock-E8400 3.0Ghz @ 3.57Ghz 1.25625v. I have 6 case fans and changed the MCP fan. I bought the Ximatek-S1283 HSF and replaced it's 120mm fan with a Thermaltake 120mm variable speed A2029 RTL. This is what i got for temps, Idle, and running GPU & CPU folding clients, then running OCCT to stress it. 39c full load gives me someroom to OC at a later date! ![]() EDIT: Your thread will help when I can start to OC! Thanks1 ![]() Edit #2: On a whim, I uped it to 3.6Ghz @ 1.26875v It booted up just fine but it doesn't "feel" right. I don't think it will remain stable this way. I'll run Prime95 for 1 hr and if that works, I'll run it all night.

| i have had mine at 4.0 for awhile now, and i froget all "we" went through to get it at 4.0. its winter now, and the house doesnt get warmer then 75, so the comp is perfect now. im sure i could run 4.5 and get away with it. but once summer comes, itll heat up some. just make sure you get a good het sink for that 8400, and plenty of air goin through the case. if i can take a entire new unit, build it from scratch, and get a reliable 4.0 then i fell anyone can, and the 8400 makes it way to easy. id say copy all my numbers and make'm the same on yours. worste thing that could happen is you fry the 8400. there so cheap now its not a big deal -in my eyes..

| I did a lot of looking for the HSF that I bought. I had the Arctic Freezer Pro 7 and knew It would not handle serious OC. The one I bought is one of the top 5 on the market and costs 5 to 7 bucks more than the Arctic 7! And my temps sure prove that. Put a request in at Samuknows folding and you will get lots of help-but look around first. So you'll know what to ask! I started that way- not knowing what questions to ask-it was a little rough. worth it though for the good we do. It's not often you get to help all of mankind and play Quake at the same time!

| Just as a heads up… My system would turn off (BSOD) in the middle of surfin the web, or playin a game. It started doing this pretty consistently, almost once a day. And I also noticed it would shut down and restart in the middle of the night. Checked all my numbers, and voltages and heat temps and found no problems. So I have changed my system back to all stock settings. I will be changing to better ram here in the next couple of weeks, and then start upping the OC to see if I get the same problems. Has any one experienced this sudden turn of events? I have been stable for many months and then all of sudden problems both during a load and no load situations. Any info, thanks as always. Also any one have any suggestions on fast ram for my setup?

| got some dominator ram.. any ways i moved back down to 3.6. been doing alot of research and many graphs and charts out there showing anything higher then 3.6 on the 8400 chip does not "gain" much in a gaming system. so i figure why over heat/voltage/stress the chip if 3.6 will do me just fine? any thoughts on this? also i might jump up to the i7 soon. but not sure just yet. final thoughts, the gtx280 is an awesome card.. couldnt imagine any benifits with 2xsli or 3xsli. i play all my games on high, and have no hangups. quad core chips seem to be in my future though.. any thoughts?

| any takers on the i7? or keep my 8400 for a while? what about going to an 775 quad core? if so, what quad core is the one to get? looking for about a $250 price range, and a chip that will be happy with my ram/mobo set up. and if i switch, one that will be noticably faster then my 8400.

| I would go for a 45nm quad. Q9450 or the likes if I had to stick with 775. I moved into I7 a few months back. To me it was worth the expense and learning curve. They are quick and quite fun to play with.

![]() This stupid mobo won't even run the 45nm CPU's which would be a easy upgrade for higher clocks! ![]() Oh, btw I did fix my bios problems & have everything set back up to where it was before & all is stable.

| these temps seem wierd. im idleing around 44-47c and gaming/load about 50-52c but (this is dumb i know) if i touch my zalman cooler it is cool. even the area right above the chip the actual heat sink, where the pipes come out from then they go into the fins. has any one ever touched their heat sink? 50c is like 120f. should be some kidna warm eh? im using core temp to see the umm core temps..lol

| got some updates. tore my entire system apart and re ran all the wires. alot i could run behind the case and that cleaned up alot.. i moved my hard drives to the bottom slots with a fan, and my new sata cd/dvd to the middle bays, and a clear no obstruction fan on the top bays. with cleaning and rearranging all the wires, i opened up alot more room, and the airflow has really changed. also got the cooler master V8, it just looked cool..lol about 3mm bigger and it would not fit my 900 case. as it is, i had to bend the metal frame a bit to get her in there.. wow its a tall cooler.... just fired my system up, and seeing 47c on the core temps. needs some burn in time, but well see. would be nice to see some high 30s-low 40s temps. ill have to put my system at stock settings and get an idea where she runs with all stock clocks/volts.

| As you can see by my sig, I've upgraded to the EVGA 790i. I got it second hand with the Micron memory-its junk-and I tryed to save a buck and used ckeap thermal compound. My temps are jst nuts! SPP is at 65c at idle! The rest aren't that bad but they aren't good either. Had to decide on new memory or tear mine down-a new mod will start then too-couldn't do both. I'll start the new mod in a few days! ![]()

| haven't been on here in a while, so i thought id throw out an update.. still have my 8400 chip, sitting @ 3.9 oc current temp is 44c looking for a second GTX280, but seems they are hard to find. -i don't know why? still haven't upgraded to the i7, my 8400 is working fine, and i'm pushing it to more limits. going to see how high i can get on air soon, decided i don't like liquid, although its quieter, i have been around a couple now and really don't like them. -james
