Time to ask for help.

Board arrived but had some things for Mareen that needed to get done so I didn't get to it for a while.
Put the board up on the prs-install bench and installed CPU and HSF. I through bolt that useing nylon washers.
One stick G.Skil 1Gb PC2-6400 and hook up the PSU. I turn it on and CPU fan runs but slow and then kicks it up. No Bios beep. I go about checking connections. Clearing CMOS, and doing different mem configurations. I've pulled th CPU to see if pins might be bent.Nothing. CPU Is a bit contaminared w/ something!
Can I gently wash the CPU in Alcohol or something

Does the fan for the HSF connect to the mother board or too a spare molex connector?

It has a 4 pin connection to the board.

Do you have any idea how much of a pain in the rump a bad solder connection [not broken] to a test speaker can be? I've been chasing a problem that didn't exist! No matter what I did, I could not get a bios beep. All day, all night. Damn! a little solder joint.

I've still got two problems. It won't boot with the 9600GT installed. I get 4 bios beeps: 1 long w/ 3 short.
It won't recognize the 80g IBM IDE drive. I tried a couple of different pin settings, cblslt, mst, no different. The bios won't recognize it. I plug in a 20g IBM and no problem.
I know I'll find the solution to the drive problem but the video card has me nervous. Some help with that would be nice.

I'm going from memory but I'm sure that you have at least 2 pcie slots on that board. There should be a toggle setting in the BIOS for graphic card priority: PEG/PCI or PCI/PEG. This controls which slot the BIOS looks at when it boots. I found this out once when with 2 vid cards in the machine I couldn't see the boot screens when the machine started, but when windows booted the graphics suddenly appeared.

You'll have to boot the board with a plain jane PCI card; I will assume that you have one since you say you've seen the BIOS. Look for that setting. It's a northbridge function, so take a look in that area of the BIOS. Not sure if it's the problem but it's something to try. I'm guessing it's the usual AMI BIOS template that ASUS uses these days.

It also may be good to do a long CMOS clear before doing this; remove the power and put the cap on the clear header for a couple of hours at least. Pump the power button and the reset button a few times and let the box take a nap.

I'm using a fx5200 PCI to get around in. There is only one PCI-e slot and I have found that setting you mentioned this morning. I changed it so PCI was first but it didn't change any thing. I hadn't thought of giving the cmos a long rest but I'll do that tonite. It's perfict! I have to go to the hospital tonite where they are going to do a sleep study. Maybe we'll both get a rest!
I don't remember the thread but before I bought this card I was concerned about a rumor it wasn't compatible with this board. I'm back to being very concerned.

Another oddity in the HDD situation. The 20g is the only drive it's recognizing and I just discovered it reads it as a 2.0g drive. It's full.
Something else strange. It won't boot to Hiren's Boot CD. The minute you give the cmd the speaker starts to beep like crazy. That is the only one that has one, so far, to do that.

Does anything show on the screen?

If so, how far can you get. Can you get into the bios and will it sit there for a while. Temps?

Set mem to all auto.

No, I can't get any where. It's the first bios beeps
I haven't changed settings but I'll do look and see>

Edit:
Every setting that had auto was set to auto.
I went and found out what the bios beeps are for AMI bios. 1 long and 3 short mean memory test failure:
A failure has been detected in memory above 64Mb.
I tried 1 stick of G.Skill and tried it in each slot. no joy, I then tried A Kingston 2Gb stick in all slots and same thing

Try setting it up outside the case after you do the long CMOS clear, and see what happens.

The Bios wont flash. what a pain. Ok, some one tell me what I'm doing wrong.
Everything is from the Asus site:
Everthing is on two disks. Caldera Dr. dos is on one disk and Bios file with ami flash utility on the other.
1st att :
A:/> Afudos /bios1406.rom return

A:/>Afudos /i<ROM filename> [/o<save ROM filename>]

I've tried different ways to plug file names in but it allways comes back the same. I found another cmmd line:

A:/>Afudos Bios1406.ROM /p /c return
it comes back the same.
IDEAS?

You should just have to do the following to program the main BIOS for version 4 of AFUDOS (What version do you have?):

AFUDOS <ROMFILE.ROM> /P /C

Does it throw an error back at you?
What happens if you just run afudos on it's own, with no parameters?

Afuwin came in a bundle with afudos. Newest version, this month I believe, (Afudo5236)
I ran Afuwin alone and it said it did not suport my bios. I'm going to reboot and do the same with afudos.

I just found out that the rumor I had heard concerning the video card being non-compatible with the P5Q is more true than not.
Asus P5Q and EVGA 8600 GT BIOS Update Issue | HardwareProblems.com

At this point, I'm feeling a bit defeated, tired, and I don't have a clue what to do next.

I flashed the bios with the latest,1406, no help for anything. Vid card is stiill giving 1 long and 3 short beeps. I put fdisk to look at my 80g that the bios would not recognize, fdisk couldn't see it either. That is the drive I use for XP. I don't get this. Hirem's boot Cd won't boot. The only one that behaves in that manner. Correction, it boots but when when you pick a program and exicute, it crashes and re-boots.

the cause of the problem has been found. Asus made thier PCIe 2.0 but did not make it backward compatible. I have a $125 paper weight with dual DVI.
