3 reasons not to:

Dsio just paid $500 for a motherboard that it wont work with.
Dsio just spent even more on high end RAM.
Dsio just spent hours and hours bleeding the water out of his watercooler and replacing the coolant and never ever wants to do it again.

Stupid intel.

Five reasons why you want an Intel chip....

1. Intel finally woke up to what the rest of the world already knew, and followed AMD's lead with an onchip memory controller.

2. Intel illustrate that they can't get rid of all the heat their chips generate by inventing "Turbo Boost", where other cores get turned off in order to allow the core that is running to dump its heat more quickly

3. Intel followed AMD by ditching the FSB for a HyperTransport-a-like bus.

4. Intel finally finds a use for it's 45nm fabs - weren't they already using 45nm though?

5. Intel follows AMD again, by adding a 3rd level cache.

6. I got bored at this point...

What mobo was it that you bought that won't work with the i7 processor?
Oh! Never mind...my brain just kicked in (many hrs later...) & it was for the new Rampage X48 you just got...

This is starting to sound like those "Wonder" hard drives that could only be run 8 hours a day.... Tell me I got it wrong again please.

It's not like i7 will be a flop, it will run at the same heat levels as current 45nm CPU's and will perform better. It will put the screws to AMD in the only market they still have a foothold in, but AMD had to know it was coming and has not done anything to try and keep market share again..

Are you shure about heat? Q9xxx 95W vs. i7 130W is a big difference

I've red some news about AMDs 45nm Phenoms: cooler and faster, maybe Q1 2009
hurry up AMD, I want one

i7 won't be a flop, although there's a bunch of catchup happening. Memory controller on-die is an about time moment though.

If AMD disappeared, where does that leave Intel in terms of antitrust?

While it will be a couple of weeks before I can get my motherboard I did manage to get my hands on an i7 920 quad retail sample. I have a couple of sets of DDR3-1600 but not sure if they will play together in tri-channel so that is still an unknown..

Best part will be having SLI and Crossfire available on the same board.

It's my busy season at work so I'll try and get things moving and keep up on posting my findings and benches..

You have to have a comfortable amount of disposable income to be an early adopter. I stuck with a 939 system until just last month. And I'll be sticking with my P5Q Pro for at least a couple of years. I imagine I'll upgrade the CPU at some point. Since I've lost interest in playing games, boosting my PPD was one of the justifications I used to upgrade. But that only goes so far.

Those of you who stay on the leading edge, keep the rest of us posted.

I have always been an early adopter with my home rig, my shop rig just got upgraded from a dual P3 setup to a dual Socket 940 Opteron setup this year. I run a few design and simulation programs for my business, dual 1Ghz P3's struggled to finish the sim in 16 hours where my sig rig can finish in just under 2 hours. If I could get that down to one hour, production would increase more than enough to offset a couple of thousand spent.

It also helps that my neighbor has a friend at Intel and I just happen to be building an engine for his 76 BMW 2002.

So it's not so much who you know as what they have? I want to get this straight because it's always someone else who ends up next store to THE SOURCE!

At lest this time it's some one I like.":O}

None for me thanxs. I don't care if intel is winning atm, I owe AMD. (and so do all of you.)

If the current situation continues, AMD will still be around. Unfortunately, they will have every design nice and legally stolen and implemented by intel. I just can't be a part of that. I'll have a little slower PC, and my self respect.

I know I don't owe AMD anything, I've spent plenty of my hard earned cash with them and still have AMD powered rigs. When AMD has a better product I will purchase from them again..

Just me...but it seems the best thing we can do for AMD or any company is reward their successes with patronage and their failures with a sympathic withholding of financial approval

This will, I hope, in the long run help them to stay on track with what I'm willing to spend money on...
