Dell Inspiron 8500

Afternoon guys,

My dad has an old Inspiron 8500, 2.2GHz P4M I believe. I reinstalled XP on it for him to remove viruses, and since then it will not run faster than 150mhz. I found a Speedstep driver and installed that to no avail. If anyone has ideas please let me know!!

Have you tried reinstalling the Dell proprietary OS? Hopefully, he paid the extra ~$5 to get the operating system on a CDROM when he bought the machine.

I'd look into getting the chipset drivers for the mobo.
Use CPU-Z to find out the make & model of it & download the drivers directly from the manufacturer.
This is probably your problem.

If it's an Intel board (older model) look at also installing the application accelerator drivers for the HD(s) as well.

Edit: I just looked at the specs for this laptop & it's definitely Intel CPU & mobo which is an 845, so download the drivers for it & the application accelerator for it too!

My old computer system uses a P4 2.4GHz & an 845GRG mobo, that's how I know about this stuff already...

Well, we would do that, except he misplaced all his CD's when we moved.. AKA they are in a box somewhere. Where? No idea.

I will probe it with CPUZ, but I downloaded all of the drivers from Dell based on his build number. Thank you very much however, I'll try the accelerator asap and report back!

Tonight I downloaded CPUZ, and came up with it being a i845D chipset and a 82891DB southbridge. I downloaded the Chipset Software Installation Utility and installed it. I then tried to install both the Intel® Application Accelerator, and then the Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator Driver, both failed due to not meeting the hardware requirements. I don't get it.. The mobo is listed, etc...

You just needed to dig just a little bit deeper into the downloads is all. I found this 1 page away.

These drivers are primarily for the Mobile platform instead of desktop so these should work just fine.

Performance Software - Intel® Application Accelerator - Primarily for mobile chipsets

Also the Graphics processor is a Nvidia GeForce4 4200 Go in that laptop, that's why it wasn't letting you install the Intel graphics drivers.

You need to download & install the Nvidia moble drivers for that instead here. ---> Dell Inspiron 8500 NVIDIA GeForce4 4200 Go Drivers

OR (what I would do) you could go to Nvidia's driver download site, then have it automatically scan & give you the correct drivers for the Inspiron!
Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products.

Hope that helped ya.

Yes, but I failed to find the Mobile driver link from the first link you gave me

This sounds like 1 or 2 or a combo of issues.

1. Bad OS installation.
2. Real bad driver conflicts between one or more program drivers & OS drivers.
3. A combination of the 2 above.

When this happened to me on my old comp & my OS & programs were running at a snails pace, I just did a clean install & it fixed everything right up.
(I had really bad driver conflicts to where the CPU was at 100% half of the time)

So I would check & see if the CPU is at 100% usage at idle & if it is, that's what's causing it...bad driver conflicts.
