Lapping a 775 CPU

I've search a number of tomes and asked questions and read articles on lapping (most have to do with the heat sink)
When I made my one and only attempt at the CPU, I scared the pants off my self! That nickel plating started to come of and the copper underneath just started to show. I stopped everything right there, wondering if I had just killed my CPU!
I found this a couple of days ago and did it ever make a difference. It explained it all clearly and with pictures so there wasn't s bit of fear about it any more. I'm down to 600 grit and tomorrow I'll try to find some finer stuff-would like 1200 grit or so. This made it easy!

Yea, thats the Nickel plating used on the CPU heatspreader you are taking off...
The plating is to keep the copper from oxidizing & make sure the CPU heatsink has a good surface to mount to.

But if you lap it & have the copper nice & polished without any oxidation it's a better surface to exchange heat.
The problem with doing this is you void your CPU warranty. If you don't care about that then yea, it
helps to get lower temps when OCing.

Don't tell me the warranty is null and void! Does G.Skill make CPU'S?

If the people in the warranter business are waiting for my returns-They can wait a while. I usually violate their rules just opening the pkg!

G.Skill doesn't actually make anything...but they do put together various memory products...no CPU's at all.

I know, MUff!n, but there is a grain of salt pn what you are saying, at least as far as I'm concerned. I have a tendancy to go snow blind when I tackel a problem-going further than I should.
The EVGA 780i is a good example. I busted my hump trying to get that damn thing to post-to the point of being redicules. So I put it in a box, and put it in the closet. I made a few attempts to straiten the CPU pins on the EVGA 790i but they are to small for me. I'll go have that done.I pulled the 780i out and calmly went to work on that one-by the afternoon, I not only had it posting but into CMOS so I just put it back in the closet as the new Arock P45TOUrBOTWINS2000 arrives today (open Box) I've had 6Gb of DDR3 for a while and I just went to Best Buy and picked up the BFG Gforce GTS 250 OC 1Mb card.

So pray for a good open box this time!

May the Gods of "Open Box" smile down on you & you have a perfectly working Mobo!!!
(If it is working perfectly DON'T pull it apart!)
Btw, the new graphics card is going to make a world of diff on your folding & gaming if you did that...
Big jump in performance!
Just checked out the specs on that graphics card you are getting & it kicks ass on mine...

That was the plan, but this may take a little while. It took an hour to figure out why I wasn't getting a bios beep-you'll love this-no speaker.
So I figured it's time to hook up the laptop and go get some basic info-like the manual-beep codes stuff like that!
And it is almost ainchient to set up. a whole lot of settings are done on the board-but I'm not in a hurry-I'll probly get it going tomarrow-we will see-it's off to ASrock!

Thumbs up

Interesting looking mobo...lets hope it performs as good as it looks!
ccper swears by the P45 chipset for overclocking so you should get outstanding results on this board once it's setup right.
I also read that this board has a feature on it the boots up Windows in 4 seconds from a total shutdown!
That's way cool...on Windows 7 that would be more like 2 seconds because already it boots up at 20 seconds normally & comes out of sleep in 2 seconds!

I'm very happy for you that it came in working condition!

Just like anything else that's new Mike.
It will just take a little bit of time on the learning curve to figure out where everything is on this bios is all.
But the end result will be good OCing results!
I've got a good feeling about this new system setup.

I like what I've seen from Asrock, no complaints.

Printers in Linux are EASY to get working. If I can't find a driver for them I just use either generic PS or PCL 5 and they work all the time just fine.

AIO units to? or a separate driver for the scanner?
I've had no time to work on it and I won't --it doesn't look good for the rest of the week-I haven't even got my music set-up on mine yet!
