Question Video Card for Pentium D 935 System?

I currently use the integrated graphics system on my Intel Pentium D 935 system, and it serves me just fine. I'm not a big time gamer, but I might be interested in installing an upgraded video card if it didn't cost a lot of money. I don't know a lot about video cards; as the last one I purchased was a 16MB ATi several years ago.

My question is can I get a decent level video card for under $100 and be able to play modern games (if I decide to get into gaming) without having to upgrade the power supply?

Feel free to recommend ATI, Nvidia, or what about S3 brand?

Not enough systems information dude...

We need to know this stuff before we can even start as
most modern graphics cards require additional power now.

Mine for example requires 2 six pin power adapters with a
minimum of a 550 Watt power supply. (Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 38 Amps)

Info needed...

CPU:Exact Model & speed
Motherboard: Exact model
Memory: Exact type used & amount
Graphics Bus type: AGP x4/x8 or PCI-E [1.0 x 16] or [2.0 x 16]
Powersupply: Exact model & amount

See what I'm saying?

Btw, in general any graphics card 8 series & up can play modern games but...
its to what degree they can render them at! (Low quality or high quality)

My old 8800GTS could play all the modern games but with some games I had to use lower resolutions & settings
for it to run smoothly. Crysis for example I had to do this for it to run smoothly.

CPU:Intel Pentium D 935 3.2ghz
Motherboard: Intel D945GTPLR
Memory: DDR2 667 4GB total

Graphics Bus type: PCI-E 1.0 x 16 (I couldn't find anything in manual about it being called 2.0 x 16. They just refer to it as PCI-E 16)

Powersupply: Inwin Powerman 350w (best I can do at the moment without opening the tower)

I can tell you this right away...
You have no power to work with at all as 350w isn't enough!

The very least you could get away with is a 550w "Quality"
80 PLUS PSU to be able to run a decent graphics card & power everything else too.

Even a midranged card like this requires 400w with a 24A single rail to power it.

PCI-E 2.0 offers twice the speed of 1.0 (5.0 Gb/s vs. 2.5 Gb/s), and IIRC also increased the amount of power available. It is, however, backwards compatible, so a 2.0 card will work in a 1.0 slot, and a 1.0 card will work in a 2.0 slot.

So I have no options unless I replace the power supply? That's insane! Seems like 350w is quite normal for many computers these days.

normal for computers without a dedicated video card. I would do what was already mentioned above about getting a new psu. something to the tune of 550w 80+ that way you could get any 100 dollar video card. 550 would be a nice card to get.

I agree with Bonesaw on that its normal for a computer with a integrated graphics chip to use a 350w PSU, but not with a dedicated graphics card.
Those computers with dedicated cards always use a quality 550w PSU at the minimum.

Btw, your PSU is an "El Cheap-O" unit ($25) & wouldn't put out anything
more than 10-12A on a single rail on it's best day without exploding into flames...

Cheap-O PSU Explodes into Flames!
