So tell me true A. Can I get there from here? Are such apps available or am I trying something beyond my/our strength?

I realize that windows is "the common language of choice" amoung OSs.

But is it still the only choice if one wants to extencivly bench mark and report findings...?

A couple of years ago I used Ubuntu alongside Vista on my PC. Twas good and was able to run 75% of the apps I needed back then.

Was it faster than windows? NO

Was it smoother or more appealing? NO

Was easier to use? NO

Was running games better? heck NO

even today a lot of pc-dependent devices come with no drivers for linux.

Linux? Maybe for fun but not as an alternative!

Daniel, I can write the software if need be; it's just a matter of me finding the time. With a daughter heading off to college, my employer in the midst of a massive network overhaul, my wife's issues, and taking care of my mother, time is a precious commodity right now.

If there is one thing I've learned from AOA it's this:

If you want talent you have to wait. Talent always has many demands upon it. Many oppertunites cry out for talent.... many are they who have real need of talent.

To say the very lest, you just made me one happy camper! ":O}

Was it faster than windows? NO (in whose hands was it not faster?)

Was it smoother or more appealing? NO (Set up by who did it fail to appeal to you more?)

Was easier to use? NO ( Have you equal experence of both?)

Was running games better? heck NO ( Windows has a massive head start here, one which like all it's other leads it will surely piss away..)

even today a lot of pc-dependent devices come with no drivers for linux. ( I really don't know much about how Linux handels drivers, I just know everything works.)

Linux? Maybe for fun but not as an alternative!
Yes Linux is fun, but not as an alternative to what? I've only used Linux for the last few years, other than games, I've given up nothing. Now I want to start benchmarking in our forums again. it looks like I'll have a bit of a slow start... I'm rather use to slow starts.":O}

But I do know where I want to go now. I just can't get there alone. It is my hope that by our readiness to receive them we will draw people here again. We just need to deepen the well and the water will run free, run clear again....

Chris your constantly making unfair comparisons. I suspect this is because you really don't know modern Linux as represented by say Mint.

Load up Mint Cinnamon, then we will talk":O}

Not quite - take a look at Phoronix Test Suite

However, one of the issues with benchmarking Linux is impact of the distro (for Gentoo, the flags the user has used). This includes the version of compiler used, any patches, version of the kernel and kernel configuration. Hence, two distros of Linux using the same drivers and same kernel are likely to differ in performance!

This bit is for Chris:

I can see and respect your point of view Daniel, however if you go out and buy a specific printer or a certain phone or devices that will only work when attached to a pc then you go home and realise there is no driver (to support it on linux) anywhere to be found because nobody wrote one and maybe nobody will, you call that an alternative?

I bought a nice sound card without thinking when I was about to switch to Fedora... Haven't used it sence, I'm going to plug it in just to see if drivers ever arrived for it....

Now most items say weather they are supported in LInux. No ones saying that this is a path without difficulties, but I always had difficuties in Windows as well.

Drives seem much less an inssue than they use to be.... One thing though is the Windows componate to things, Like My mother board desktop apps ( Which I'm told are crap BTW.) Linux users don't get what they pay for in this sence.
