Intel RAID on my Z77 Sabertooth... I have...questions...

I clear my experimental Debian and Mint Mate drives in order to RAID them, stripped for a new C drive of terrifying Speed, ( That's how I pictured it,... people falling away from their monitors in horror as I post my benches; The RAID madness now fully upon me!!)

But I've become a cautious lunatic of late and so I have my manuel in hand as I run over to Advanced menu and Open up on my SATA drives and strip them of their ACHI status. No More lone gun cowboy antics from these two drives from now on they will have to punch those digits as a team..

(Hey!! I trying to make this fun, so pay attention!)

I glance down at the book and my eye falls upon this bit of small print, a mere side note, an after thought on Asus' part as it were:

I change from over from AHCI to RAID and read, just out of curiosity you understand, I read, and my eyes wobble a bit

"Due to chipset limitation, when set any of SATA ports to RAID mode, all SATA ports run at RAID mode together"

Are they honestly telling me It's all or nothing? I literally have ten Sata ports.

Do I have to give them all up to RAID 0 two drives?

I tested a bit, If set to RAID, my main drive, (Drive I use now and want to duplicate on my RAIDed drives), Can't boot, missing MBR.

So Intel RAID is effectively eye candy that costs too much to look at?

I guess I could go into the BIOS and switch back and forth From AHCI to Raid, unplugging drives and plugging them in as I go...Stupid!

Can some one say if what they ment was that while creating RAID sets not to have any other drives plugged in... doesn't seem to be what's being said...but to have 10 port hung up on ACHI or RAID seems just really dumb, why bother to have RAID if it costs you every SATA port!

OK this is the part in the movie where, in the kindest way possible, you tell me I'm the one being stupid, not Intel...Please... tell me that!

I just looked at what Newegg has to offer as far as 2 port RAID 0 Cards...Nothing really, people are not pleased with what is out there!

Intel has an 8 port that's PCIe 3 for 450 bucks...

The rest are all PCIe 2 and seemingly very cheap knock offs that don't really work.

Anyone know of an inexpensive 2 port RAID card PCIe 2 or 3 that handles Linux?

I don't see how that can be the case, as the Z77 chipset only has 6 SATA ports on it (the brown and black ones). Those can be run in RAID mode. The remaining 4 are on the ASM1061 SATA controller (the gray and red ones), which can only handle HD devices.

I suspect they mean that when you set RAID mode, the disks connected to the brown and black SATA ports are then managed by Intel's RAID BIOS rather than the normal BIOS.

If you're going to swap to running RAID, I'd STRONGLY recommend that you set up your RAID volumes first, and then install your OS. Linux supports Intel's RAID configuration, but MINT needs special configuration before you install it, as by default it won't install the RAID driver or understand your RAID layout.

There's some details at Linux Mint Forums that might help.

using this guide

I didn't get to far:

Quote:
1. Go into your motherboard’s BIOS and turn on the RAID support

2. Go into your RAID’s BIOS and set-up your RAID partition

3. Boot the Live CD

4. Open Terminal and type the following:

sudo apt-get install dmraid

5. Once completed the above installation, type the following:

sudo modprobe dm-raid4-5
I get:

daniel@daniel-P5Q ~ $ sudo modprobe dm-raid4-5
FATAL: Module dm_raid4_5 not found.
daniel@daniel-P5Q ~ $

Yeah, remember that Mint doesn't ship with software RAID drivers - that's either "dmraid" (not recommended - no longer maintained) or "mdadm". You'll need to choose one of the two and stick with it. I've seen mdadm recommended for Mint though. It looks like mdadm may well be able to read the Intel RAID configuration data, which makes your life very slightly easier. Also, there may be issues with grub (the bootloader) not liking the RAID set up, so you may have to manually install grub in order to make it work.

I'm not exactly sure where partitions get built in this mess. I have a feeling that if you've used the Intel BIOS option ROM to build the RAID partitions, mdadm may automatically pick them up. Anyhow, you need to install the mdadm driver when you're booted from the live DVD:
  • open terminal window
  • enter "sudo -s" to get a root shell - you'll need it here.
  • enter "apt-get install mdadm" to install the mdadm driver
  • you should then be able to do "ls /dev/md" and see what turns up (post a picture!)
  • you can then type "mdadm --detail-platform" and it should tell you that you're using Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager (post a picture!)
  • Next, you need to assemble the array containers - enter "mdadm --assemble --scan"
  • mdadm will now be building the arrays, so there may be lots of disk activity.
  • You should be able to partition and format disks now as part of the installation, but they'll appear with the names you've given them in the Intel RAID BIOS (I think?)
At this point, I'm a little unsure of the next step, so the pictures would be good to have. I know it's a pain not to have a working machine (as this will remove file systems on the existing disks).

The manual update part would be something along the lines of:
  • At end of install, choose "install grub manually"
  • chroot into installed system (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gr...talling#ChRoot )
  • use grub-install on your top level partition of the RAID array
  • update-grub to fix issues.
  • then you should be good to reboot.

Now, I've not tried this, but it'd be interesting to see what does happen.

Many thanks, I'll give this a shot...

Not to worry, I have a separate drive, the one I'm using now, so failure is now an option! ":O}

I just unplug it while I play with the RAID drives. As my drives are identical and I get confused rather easily.

Yes, I switched my drives (To be RAIDed) over to the Intel 6G SATA ports and chnged ACHI to RAID, rebooted hit CTRL+i to enter, RAIDed at 128K

Now shows RAID option at each boot.

Hmm, that's not so good. Guess it's going to be a step back and evaluate what's going on! That tends to indicate that mdadm isn't reading the IMSM block off the drives for some reason. Maybe I should get you to drop the contents of dmesg into a file (after you've done the mdadm stuff). From a terminal window type "dmesg >dmesg-output.txt". That should create a file called "dmesg-output.txt" that you can then attach to a post here.

Trouble is, it's a brick! All I can do is close terminal and start over.

Very nice. For some reason mdadm seems to rely on postfix (possible to send email to say the RAID array is broken?). I guess that means we'll have to install postfix to keep it happy. I guess we'll choose "No configuration" at this point (using the tab button to highlight it, and enter to select it) to see what happens.
